Should i buy a older E 55 AMG?

I found a used 98 model with low miles for a bargain.

Are those older Mercs still reliable for daily driving?

Id say they are more reliable and higher quality than some of the newer cars that Mercedes is putting out.

Nice car, good quality, but heavy and underpowered compared to the later supercharged model.

I agree! I've owned a few of them in the 80"s and 90's and they are very reliable but just remember if something does go it cost a small fortune to repair.

Great car. I'd say if you can afford the upkeep then go for it.

Good luck

+1 for the high cost of upkeep. Try $1000 for transmission "service" on a standard E class. I am sure the AMG will be the same or even a bit more.

Are you sure it's not a '99 as I don't think 1998's were brought into the States?

I had a 2000 E55 and thought it was a great car.

prolly a great car (couldn't tell you anything about a mb) BUT, take the car to the dealer and have them check it out. If all it needs is belts and hoses and you can stand the bill for that, then you are ready for a MB.

Back in its day it was cool, but I would never consider buying that thing today. You wonder why its such a bargain? Its just not worth it.

i work at a MB dealer and ive never seen a 98 E55 personally, earliest year ive seen is 99, so i think you may be right. from what i gather from the mechanics the W210 E classes in general are the most reliable, but it will cost an arm and a leg to repair and maintain especially an AMG model.

Mines is daily driven. I have 120K+ miles on it. No problems except some light bulbs going out. My wife likes the ride quality better in it than my Evo.

I am a tech at an MB dealer and I agree with what was said above, the 210 model E class (up to 2002) was a very good car. They are reliable and dont have too many weird costly repairs. Where are you located?

As for the trans service, $1000 is a complete rip off. We charge $150 labor and parts are around $60-100 so thats around $250 at my dealer.

if youre gonna get one.. get a new one.. 470hp 518 trq.... spent 1000$ on chip and pulley its around 540hp and 590 trq now. mama's ride! and from past experience... ya never want to own a german car thats not under warranty. the motors will never break down.. but all kinds of other stupid stuff goes bad.. they have waaaay to much electronics for something not to go wrong. 10x more than a normal car.

2006 with the designo package 24k not one problem yet... the amg's are pretty much bullet proof.. the C, CLK, E and ML are pieces of ****.. if it doesn't have a v8 its going to break.

cheers!
