New GT500 Shelby

Here is the results from Car and Driver's lightning lap:
2006 Mazda MX-5 - 3:29.3
2006 Honda Civic Si - 3:26.5
2006 Volkswagen GTI - 3:25.1
2006 Ford Mustang GT - 3:20.9
2006 Chevy Cobalt SS - 3:20.6
2006 Mazda RX-8 - 3:19.0
2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 - 3:18.2
2006 Mitsubishi EVO MR - 3:13.5
2006 Nissan 350Z Track - 3:12.5
2007 Ford Shelby GT500 - 3:11.0
2006 BMW M6 - 3:10.0
2006 Porsche Cayman S - 3:09.5
2006 Chevy Corvette - 3:09.3
2006 Lotus Elise - 3:09.2
2006 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe - 3:01.6
2006 Chevy Corvette Z06 - 3:01.1
2005 Ford GT - 3:00.7
The GT500 also had ignition problems, so you could probably knock 1 second off that time. An EVO 8 would be even slower compared to the GT500. I'd still go for a 'Vette though - cam & headers + stickier tires equals a wicked car.

The Shelby is a sweet car, and I wouldn't blame anybody for trading in for one. Me personally wouldn't do it though, especially since the cost of the Shelby is at nearly $45,000. Just not my cup of tea. But the Shelby sure would draw a lot of attention.

My point is, since his EVO is already modded, power shouldn't really be part of the equation, if he is just tired of his EVO, I can understand. Or he just wants to start a new project, or etc. But he wants a faster car, not really the situation here. Also going from a relatively light weight EVO to a car that weighs close to 4,000Lbs is interesting.

I knew someone would post that comparison! I have little doubt that most people could throw a GT500 around a moderate road course faster than a EVO. The straightline acceleration of the GT500 would make up the slight handling disadvantage that it has.
Stock for stock no mods GT500 all the way except in autox.....who likes that
I already posted a link awhile back to a 9.9@140mph GT500 stock block, stock ported blower, stock heads, stock rear, tune, sauce, exhaust, filter, pretty impressive shut up all of the naysayers pretty good...........all on pump............................including myself

As some one already stated magazines aren't really the best thing to go off of, VIR just isn't a really great course for a somewhat laggy EVO. Go read Road and Track, and you'll see that the EVO actually bested the Cayman S on a tighter road course, but like I said magazine racing is stupid.
No need to believe I'm infringing on the EVOs world superiority. Heaven forbid someone brings up a test that doesn't play to the EVOs strengths

Is this even a question? Shelby all day. Again Evos are nice, and I love mine....but youll be in the 9's oh so much faster in a Shelby. Not to mention some minor suspension mods, and maybe some brake mods and im sure it would be more than capapble on a road course....then again who gives a **** about road courses in a GT500??? Its a MUSCLE CAR.
It was made to be about cruising, hearing the rumble of the exhaust, and blowing the rear tires up when ever you lay on the throttle.
AWD isint the end all be all, its been proven time and time and time again that there is no superior platform in most forms of racing than rear wheel drive.

Right. Ever ridden in a GT500? Or know anyone that owns one? I went on a cruise with a bunch of 03/04 cobras and one GT500. The cobra in the front has 500hp and lowering springs on the stock IRS and the GT500 was on his tail the entire time. Driver of the lead cobra said he was drivin like crazy to get away but just couldn't.
As you can see the OP has a modded Evo. Can you imagine what springs, pulley swap and exhaust would do for a Shelby?

Performance wise, well...sky's the limit. The potential is just overwhelming. However, in stock form the GT500 has been a huge dissapointment...probably the slowest 500hp (believed to be 550) vehicle ever.

Springs won't do miracles in a GT500...the car is a 4000lb pig. It will never handle like an Evo. Period.

dude.. do not do this, the GT500 is so damn overpriced.. same cheap build quality on the rest of the car that the base mustang has.
I just traded my evo for a C6 z51 corvette.. you can pick one up now for low 40s and its superior the the GT500 in every performance category stock plus its a much better looking car. (GT500 cant handle and with 100hp more is slower in the 1/4?) Headers cam and intake and your at 430whp with a top speed near 200mph.
the vette isnt as sharp as the evo in the steering deparment because it has gummy bushings (which can easily be replaced)..its pretty much superior in every other aspect though.. braking, handling, top end.. plus 30mpg on the highway. I have a few mods on it.. and like that the engine starts opening up big time.

MM&FF actually ran 12.2 stock. The cars respond so well to mods, it doesn't really matter what they run stock. A pulley could take one into the high 11's.

Exactly. theyve hit 10's with very little modification. Not to mention you can actually launch the gt500 on slicks without spewing your rear diff all over the track.
The Corvette is a sexy car though.

Magazine racing I was showing how the GT500 did against the competition at VIR (i.e., 17 of today's best cars on the same track at the same time(something most will never see)).
No need to believe I'm infringing on the EVOs world superiority. Heaven forbid someone brings up a test that doesn't play to the EVOs strengths
