ATTN:prior turbo honda hatchback owners

Im looking into building a 1996-2000 honda civic hatchback(EK)

what are the pros/cons of this build?
do they lose power up top?
hows the lag?

if i do a ek build im looking into a b18c1 motor with GSR tranny and either the b18 head or b16.going fully built, cams, valves, retainers, sleeves, intake mani, turbo etc..

my goal is to build a 10sec street hatch.and 400-600hp.

what motor would you go with?tranny?etc

now the only downfall to this is id have to sell the evo(mods in signature) and pay it off get another loan and build the EK...it seems like i could build the EK for way cheaper.

if you could let me know pros and cons to this id really appreciate this..thanks in advance

Didn't know you were that serious about it.

Pro- light weight
Con- wrong wheel drive, complete lack of torque

No, they don't lose power up top. They make their power up top.

Lag's gonna be worse since you'll be working with even less displacement than with the Evo.

I would build a 92-95 if i were you. They are lighter and a stonger platform. Ive seen ek's (96-00) civics get the mounts ripped right off the frame rails a few times on high horsepowered ones, or atleast reinforce all the mounts if you want to do a 96-00.

my honda does not have that much power but i will try and help.

lag is not bad when you have sucky fwd because what are you going to do with TQ down low.... just spin tires my turbo does not come in with full boost tell 4700 rpm but Vtec does not hit tell 5200 and i rev the stock motor to 9000 so as long as when u shift you are still in boost and vtec then u will be fine if it is only going to be a drag car.

Off boost is not bad if u have high enough compression. some people are getting 400+whp from the stock b18 (GSR) motor i don't know how long it will last but they do it. (i make 220whp on a mustang dyno on pump gas from a B16 and my CRX weights 1770lbs and from a roll will kill my evo but the evo is pretty stock but a little hp goes along ways.

make sure you setup the front end with drag bars and good shocks and u are going to need some slicks

Get a good DIFF and driveline in the car.

They are fun on the highway but smoken both tires at 60+mph really gets old.

that is about it.

oh yeah make sure u get hondata for management and if you are a real baller you can run a k20 swap.

ek honda is heavy,, you be better off with an eg.. 93-95 civic hatch. as for your engine I would go with a k series motor 2.4 liter way more torque and power.. b series motors are torqueless wonders.

well I built a 1996 the same way you are looking at building and i did break mounts I had hasport mounts and a full race kit made 420 to the wheel and it sucked to drive when I was done, all of your races should be done at a 45mph roll and you will still spin um alot, if you drive normally its ok but then what is the point of a getting a turbo. you should just put a K24 in it a have more streetable power, then move to a turbo if you feel the need for more.

Yo I own an eg hatch which is the lightest honda offerd at under 1800 lbs. I put a b18c in along with the hydro tranny from the integra. I love it and would never sell it. The pros in my oppinion outweigh the perks. Let me 1st say that it will become a true frankenstein car. No more fit and finish you'll be used to. Crap things like no room crappy dated dash and interior. My biggest problem with it is traction. I have 18s on it and have around 425 horse with a t4 turbo and nitrous. You will not be ever on the gas when you go through a corner due to the wheel spin your car will always keep going straght. Dont forget the weight difference over the front wheels doesnt help either. I have tein coilovers and with the added weight the car takes a beating on the motor mounts when the road gets ****ty. However IT WILL BE WICKED FAST. Just the swap alone with nitrous I think is faster then the evo on the freeway. Vtech + Turbo = death machine. In short too fast even with the proper mods for the original 95 hp car to handle. Good luck

I found this on honda-tech i think they all have dyno graphs to get on the list

http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread/1478127

so you can see hp and tq for these stock motors i think it is pretty good but i don't know how long they would last like this.

By "Stock Block" I mean: Stock block, rods, pistons...ect. Stock below the headgasket

Because there seem to be a lot of high HP stock block setups coming about, I thought it might be kinda interesting to see whos at the top of the list.

Post your #s, setup, and how long the setup has lasted. Dynos above 3Kft post your uncorrected #s just to keep this somewhat fair, and to appease Tony...hehe .

EDIT: to keep the lists informative, and relatively simple I am limiting them to the top 10. If trap speeds are given, I'll try to keep you up on the list, because the HP figure + trap speed is more important than just a dyno.

EDIT: (3/12/07) For the lists that are full, I am no longer updating the list.

TIA
Bryson
