Have you considered a new VW GTI? IMHO, a far better car than the Mini. You can get one for 22k.

My only complaint is that it is very busy inside the cabin

Especially compared to the Evo

The minis may handle well but feel gutless. The power is so dissapointing for a small car with that kind of power. I've driven just about every model and IMO you have to push this thing to keep up in traffic.

I had a Cooper S before. They are not that fast, but they are fun to drive. It was the most intuitive / easy to drive car that I had todate. Very easy to modulate understeer / provoke oversteer with brake / throttle inputs. Love the exterior but the interior (although cute) not to my taste. Due to the lower handling limits and lower power, it is very easy to explore the limits of the car. Having said that, I would not get one if I was living in the States. Where I live, car taxes go exponentially with engine volume, so a Cooper S at around the half price of an Evo presented a performance bargain (just like the Evo)
