Talk me out of a 4.6L Blown Mustang

OK,

I'm not selling the Evo, it's my daily driver and my true love...

But I'm lusting some muscle right now, and I'm leaning towards an 00-04 Mustang GT w/ Kenne Bell Supercharger.

This would be a build up from stock. I'm really posting to get past owners of blown Mustangs to tell me why they hated it or what is going to break or just **** me off about the car.

Again, it wouldn't be a daily driver, that's why I've got my trusty Evo.

As far as comments of "Just spend all that money on your Evo" I'm not really interested, because the Evo build is just about done in my eyes and I don't want any more power or money into it.

if i was to get a muscle car, it would not be a mustang, i would go for a 68 camaro or if you really want a mustang and older shelby mustang would be the choice

If you're building from stock, ya might as well get a 96+ Cobra with 4v heads for about the same price. A 96-98 Cobra with a forged bottom end, ported heads (or stock '03-'04 Cobra heads) and a blower/turbo would be the ticket.

Have you ever ridden in a mustang? compared to an Evo there's no feeling of control watching them go down the strip is hilarious beause of how much they squat and dive during shifts, while still pulling a 14. a camaro, while heavier is the better performer in every category. power, handling, gas milage, braking, every ***** not having one, Etc.
That said, The 4 valves are durable as all hell. If you do buy one, get one of those. the bottom end is Safe for 800 HP. 1000 is where you start really pushing the bottom end on a driver. also, the T56 in the later cars (not sure which got the six speeds) can handle some serious abuse as well. just watch out for halfshafts on the irs cars.

So I'd have to find a 96-98 or 00-04 Cobra engine because those are the only 4V, right ?

Go with a cobra 02 and up comes supercharged.. Remove it and put the kenne bell on it. Then to make a tad bit more a nice dry kit....

A guy down here in the tampa bay area running something similar to that.. damn near a 9sec street car..

making a nine second street car is not at all difficult if you've got 8 cylinders, money, and an efficient blower these days. I know of about four eight second cobras, and six 8-9 second LS1's all with BIG blowers and likely well hidden nitrous kits. the chicago area has ridiculously fast cars, and an overgrown street racing scene so it may just seem easy to me.

If you are gonna get a Mustang, spend the money on an 03-04 cobra. That car, despite its ANCIENT chassis that feels like it was built with wet noodles and elmers glue....

The IRS isn't great for handling, and is definitely not great for drag racing. Ive witnessed two separate cobras on the same track night **** parts out of the IRS pumpkin.

BUT! The motor is awesome....I think the stock block HP record is over 800hp, Im not sure. It comes with a damn good tranny, beeifer than the stock T5's in the regular mustangs...

And if you want BIG power, built iron short blocks are cheap and turbo kits will pound out 800 streetable HP>

But if not, the GT is an OK option...the cobra is just a better starting platform.

Just get an 03/04 Cobra. Slap a 2.6 or 2.8 Kenny Bell on it and call it a day.

Thanks for all the feedback...

The problem is, I'm not ready to shell out $30 grand on another car... more like half that. If I look hard enough, I can find a 01-04 GT for under $10... a Cobra will be twice that. Plus the cost of the KB kits is the same either way...so it makes more sense to build the GT, and if it blows, get a forged shortblock for $3500 and I'm back in business.

I wanna spend $15k ish

I don't need to daily drive or set track records, I just want a fun muscle car for street & occasional strip... nothing fancy, the Evo is my primary vehicle and primary project... this would be just a side project to keep me occupied and get me acquainted with muscle.

Actually, Ive found a few cobras for 17-18k.....

It would save you the trouble of worrying about popping open a GT motor.......

But then again, you might just wanna do this instead...............go buy a GT for ten grand. To HELL with the KB Supercharger. I rode in a car with this :

http://www.ststurbo.com/mustang_gt_twin_turbo

I know its for an 05-08 car, but IIRC they make a turbo kit for the older mustangs or the universal system works just as well, just needs a bit of work.

Easy as an exhaust to install, and the car I rode in was nuts. Absolutely NUT. I was trying to talk a friend who had an 03 cobra with a very beefy built DSS shortblock to add the twin turbo kit on top of his KB supercharger, and have the best of both worlds.

He didn't do it.

Do me proud bro!

Have to jump on the 03-04 Cobra bandwagon. You can find one in the low 20's and with under 5k can trap high 130's. Buying a older 4V or 2V with crappy trans, crappy motor, isn't the way to go IMO.

Here is a stock block cobra 995whp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlY3MIUAQfU this is on DR's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isl-Ggtgrgo this is on slicks.

Here is a stock suspension, stock trans, stock engine ported stock blower with a 60 shot running mid 10's@135mph.

Here is the stupid fast model.
