well i was a die hard 03 evo VIII guy. for the main arguement that i HATE electronic controls intervening with my driving. with all mechanical difs and stuff the car reacts EXACTLY the same everytime. i drove the X when it first came out and i was pissed it had no power over 5k and the AYC bogged it down etc. i have been following the progress with the car lately and they are making great leeps and bounds. with the factory reflash the powerband is fixed and they are making great gains with as stated before very low cost basic mods. i have started to move on from my hard core racing days over 35 track days and drag racing A LOT. my VIII is beat and tired. i need reliable transportation with the same handling and speed. the X like they designed it to be is for the maturing crowd. i love the looks and i will be making about the same monthly payment as i am now if all works out well. we'll see here in the next 2 weeks. Rally Red GSR from SCM just like my VIII haha

not really. i think they just love they cars.
the X is away better dd, and light mod car platform. the IX is away better hardcore race car.
WHY? because its proven and it have a proven after market support vs. the X.
i can't even buy an intake - exhaust set up yet for the X what i like...
Not to mention, if you want to dig deeper...

Why not get one of each?
Old Evo = Race car, proven engine, less awd wizzardy (more of you driving), raw and ruthless, lots of aftermarket.
New Evo = Daily, it's designed as an Evo so it should be more reliable than a Honda and most Toyotas, safer for passengers than older evo (7 airbags), Awd Wizzardy for when you're not fully paying attention to the big Suv that's decided to lane change into your lane when it's Pouring Rain (SAWC save the day), more civilized.

There's not much difference at all between the X and Evo 9, straight line wise! People make 2 tenths sound like 2 miles, the X is way more refined, however it's still a race car at heart with a teched out AWD system (which was the main reason I purchased the X and not the 9). The X has been out for what, 6 months so yeah it hasn't reached it's full potential as far as mods go and to me it is a proven platform, trust me... Take a test drive!

Simply becuase you where totally unaware as they where not availible intil the 8. You were not on a forum discussing the switch from the evo 6 to 7, 7 to 8 etc.
Even amongst 03' Evo 8s and 05' evo 8s there was plently of trading up, crap talking and deffensiveness over the years.
If you go to Lancer registry it's all there, it went down all the same between pretty much all models since the Evo 1.
The general trend in the evolution series seems to be towards heavier more powerful, expensive and technologically advanced cars. Understandable...
They are all Evos and ideally I would own a full house from a evo1 VR4 to a 10 and every iteration in between. I'm sure I would find something to like in all of them but due to $ and space I'll keep my 03' 8.

I tried to love X , but i just can't
almost the same way why I didnt get the VIII when it came out ,
the VIII had a open differential , 271HP , no 6 sp , no ACD , I know it will fix those eventually , when it dose , I would hate the VIII I spent more on.
Same for the X , inflated price , lousy seat quailty, misfortune of the MR release date , depressing MPG (seems fixed by reflash now but still ... can do better ) , super small trunk, gained more lbs than lb/ft or HP
I bet lot of those ppl who expressed their dislikes about the X will look at the XI again and try to love it again, dose of HP rise can always makes ppl forget the bads

More or less , Evo X 's main selling point is the MR SST , i think they have invested most money to that and went cheap with other stuff...

my point is that they're not as expensive as you were making them out to be.

High price? I know that the past couple of years some evo's have been at a pretty decent price, but right before I purchased my evo in july of 2003, I think it was in march. I knew of at least 2 guys that bought an evo with only the carbon spoiler, and with out a sunroof, for around 38-39,000. when I bought mine it was the only blk evo on the lot, and it was the only one with the sunroof. and I think I got it for 32000, and that was after tax tags and dock fee.
