Mazdaspeed3 is a garbage car with a plethora of significant issues.
Smoking turbos
Complete engine failure even in stock form
Bad syncros or all together tranny failures...
Oh the list is so huge.

I put 25K miles on my 2008 Mazdaspeed3 without any of the issues above. And Mazda issued a recall on the turbo. Plus the dealerships were mod friendly, easy to work with and provided loaners.
Hows your FLMD? (Friendly Local Mitsubishi Dealership)
on topic: Neither car will blow your doors off without a serious infusion of mods. The MSP wont take a larger turbo very well and cant go above ~14-17 psi without block failure. The Civic is NA and requires high revs. either one can be fun!

No they effect all years of production. Mazda cuts corners, period, they always have. They even have an engine failure sticky on the main forum with 140+ replies and I've read through them. They even effect regular 3's.

which forum? not doubting you, I would just like to read it. I'm planning on getting one used for a daily driver. i'm also planning on keeping it stock, so I'm looking for one still under warranty. I was thinking about a new MS3 or GTI but it's not worth the extra money IMO.
but yea, I'd love to see the thread. I've heard of engine failures but I didn't think they were THAT prevalent.
