1990-94 Mercury Topaz!

there are plenty of awd imprezas out there for well under $5, especially if you don't really care what it looks like. That would probably be my first choice.

I coulda sworn there was an article in SCC a ways back. I think the minimum you need is like $8000. I know it depends on car and whatnot, but even with a cheap car, the tires, the fees, license($?), safety equipment.. If you have that low a budget, I wouldnt even look at a 4wd car. Just IMO. 323gtx.. I had one of those. The maint. will be too much. I would imagine a cheap 2wd car would do you good. preferably RWD.

4WD rally classes are too competitive. It will cost a fortune to run a competitive car. Stuff will break, so you want a simple, reliable car. Stick with FWD at first. The most popular starter car seems to be a 1st or 2nd generation VW Rabbit/Golf. Lots of room inside for a cage and 2 people. Strong engine that's easy and cheap to rebuild. Good reliability, solidly built, lots of aftermarket support, and (best of all) really cheap to buy.

Other popular starter rally cars are the Mazda 323, Ford Festiva, and Suzuki Swift. Basically, any light and cheap FWD car will do. Just remember to budget about $1000-2000 for a cage, $500 for a pair of Kirkey seats, $500 for a pair of 5- or 6-point harnesses, about $350 for a helmet, and about $800 for a suit. I don't know the cost of a rally computer off the top of my head, but figure at least $250 or so (I'm guessing).

All in all, it makes much more sense to buy someone's old rally car rather than try to build one from scratch.

I'm sorry, I'm not going competitive at this time. I'm just too busy to even try. I just want to dick around and experiment at the moment. I have an MX6 V6 right now as my car, would that be an okay car to keep and change over to rally.

grab a 6g galant GSX, you can get one dirt cheap. good thing they come awd. Downside drifin isnt as effortless as with a fwd or rwd. BUT in snow and mud nothing beats awd. You dont have to worry about loosing momentum and getting stuck.

Don’t nock the Swift. These cars are great and used a lot for rallying here in the UK. With the correct suspension (don’t venture much from the standard setup0 they are a real hoot. Best to go for the 1.3ltr GTI.

Just curious, any reason behind getting the GSX but not the VR-4? Was that the price?

It's getting pretty hard to find a Swift GTI around here. They've all been snapped up for rallycross and rally use!
