Smike's FRS Test Drive

I dunno, the odds of seeing a "rare" car go up if you take 3,800 of them and then place them in the 103,737 square miles of New Zealand.
So, how about this:

A shattering 278whp.

I guess NZ is special, but they're pretty rare in the rest of the world
edit:
i'm calling BS on this, but i can't find any production numbers for NZ so i can't prove anything... I think the fact that i can find production for USDM, EDM, AUDM, but nothing on NZDM says something...

When they dropped in price, importers bought them in by the boatload because people were going nuts for them because of how cheap they were and how good the car was. Same thing happened with EVO 4s, we have loads of them here.

Back on topic:
I went to see the Toyota 86 Coupe at my local dealership. They have one model available for demo. Bare bones base model with auto trans Turns out however the GT86's only extra that isn't aesthetic is the larger front disc and ventilated rear, so...meh. A lot of the features make the vehicle sound great but are things I'm not going to get excited about. The wheel arches that enable you to see the position of each wheel from the driver's seat, that might help me if it was the first time I was driving it but not really that great if I owned it. The pipe on the intake that channels the engine noise into the cabin - no comment. And a handful of other things make me think that those who don't like a the vehicle are not in the target market (looking at you Smike). Our pricing, 86 MT $42K (add $1k for AT and $5k for GT model).
I am going to make my way back to the dealer in time to drive it.
What caught my eye was the TRD edition that is being offered. It is essentially a Toyota 86 that has been modified, the vehicle even gets the modification certification plate that is required for certain mods here in NZ. An initial run of 20 is being built and further models will be built to order, all individually numbered. Brembo 6 pots up front and 4 pot rears, a full aero kit, two twin tip mufflers and a few other aesthetic additions. Not sure if they all add up to the $20k increase in price though. Further TRD accessories are available for fatter wallets.

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
Body kit and BBK for 20k more? And of all the things this thing needs...brakes were not one of them.
No kids have that sort of cash unless they deal crack. And crack is bad for you.

...and to put it all into perspective, many people feel I'm driving an overpriced Golf which is a $5k premium over the top-model GTI
$5k for AWD, body kit and different brakes, interior and wheels doesn't seem so bad in comparison now --- lol

Here's something new the BRZ/FR-S can claim that other comparable cars might not: Both have received the IIHS Top Safety Pick. Smike, I know you don't give a flying **** about this but it's very important to the parents of the demographic this car is aimed at.

This thread is testament to why I don't get into discussion with BRZ/FR-S owners at my job. I just say "The car is great for what it is." While I agree that the car is slow, I'm certainly happy it exist because there was a void in the cheap car market for RWD cars.
Maybe, just maybe lower end base cars will start seeing rwd drivetrains w/ honda being the exception; I love how they make FWD work.
P.S. I wish Ford would bring the Focus RS here as that car makes FWD work very well too.
