< 200HP is lame? Says who!?
Saying a car with < 200HP isn't impressive, well... I guess it depends on the car.
Mini Cooper S. I'm sorry, but for under $20K, that car is a bloody hoot. Fast? No, but it has some gusto. But man, turns that would put my 3G Eclipse on the border of breaking traction that little car did without so much of a chirp from the tires. The car is a screaming bargain (unless you option it up) and is only now ticking in at 170HP.
Drove the Mazdaspeed Miata today, and I am nothing short of thorughly impressed on what $26,000 can buy you today. Heck, the car would definitely be under $25,000 if it was a hardtop, and the thing is worth every cent. I drove the Miata when I ended up with the Eclipse. I wanted more grunt, but I could never attempt to fault the thing's handling. The Mazdaspeed is easier to swing around than the S2000, no word of the lie, and I'm quite a fan of that hi-revving Honda. 178HP is plenty for a grand ol' time.
And what about the almost here Lotus Elise? If I didn't have to drive 50 miles for service, and knew that parts for the thing cost a ton, and could cope with Lotus's legendary unreliability, and could resign myself to driving a winter beater, and had a garage, that's a car that would make me say "Evo-what?". I've driven an '88 Esprit, and that lil red car was nothing short of Satan-on-wheels. Granted, that was blown and had over 200HP, but good lord, what a machine! 190HP, but it has supercar status in my mind, and for under $40K. It's no wonder that they're almost sold out. I can't wait for that portion of rich yuppies who have no idea what they're buying start dumping them so psychopaths like me can get into one even easier.
And hey, don't get me started on the pre-TR5 Triumphs. The cars may be as much twice as old as I am, but I don't bloody care. I'd do a lot for a TR3.
