Question: Subaru WRX STI - Center diff - mechanical & clutch pack

The latest iteration of the WRX STi has a center mechanical Planetary Diff with a clutch pack electronic/computer controlled clutch pack over it.

Depending on which source I look at, sometimes it says the planetary is a limited slip by itself and then the clutch pack offers additional lockup characteristics determined by the computer/DCCD control. Some sources don't say the Planetary is a LSD some do.

Are they being sloppy in their description, are all planetary diffs LSDs, who cares it's a Subaru, !?

Planetary central diff - LSD by itself?

I am sure there is more detailed info out there, but here is a start https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/n...created-equal/

From reading that, it seems the DCCD uses a mechanical LSD of some sort, as well as an electronic ACD like the EVO.

interesting quick overview of the system. I wonder why Subaru felt the need for both? I don't know if they have a dccd ecu like the evo has an acd ecu, but the programming for it is quite comprehensive (and can obviously be tuned). they said the mechanical can react quicker to input stimuli than the dccd - wonder if that is the true reason.

Subaru continues to refine their awd systems and the drivelines are pretty durable. I am actually pretty excited to see the next gen STI with the new modular platform and hopefully the 2.0 from the S207. If it ends up weighing under 3400lbs. I might just have to buy one.

not sure why it would use the ej20, unless the s207 uses a different motor.. the new wrxes use the fa20 right? we'll probably get a variation of that.

I am not up on my Subaru engine codes, but the S207 uses a revised version of the 2.0 boxer engine. I suspect there are a number of changes over the standard wrx 2.0 for it to be rated at 323 hp.

The FA20 is the new direct injected 2.0L. I'm pretty sure that is what the S207 has in it.

As good as more "modern"/on-demand/part-time systems might be, I'm not interested. That's why I'm reading up on the wrx sti because it's the last sophisticated AWD that's somewhat affordable. It may be that Subaru might slap a torque vectoring rear diff on (lol and crush the Focus RS) or they might kill it's current configuration in favor or a lesser on demand system.

Subaru could crush all comers by doing an AWD BRZ STi with an updated uprated engine.
