I was able to eventually pass using aftermarket cat: Walker part number - 82633. See my post #833 for the full story.

Best of luck OP.
Finally got everything ready to go to the state ref. I went with your recommended walker CAT. Everyone telling me here "you should be fine with 3" flanges" because they can't do 2.5 to line up piping or w/eAnyway hopefully the dudes cool. $2,500 later and Injen taking 5 months to ship finally ready.
now I just need a new clutch nad flywheel 🥲

I'll be selling an Evo 9 with all the OEM stuff and ECU flash from the Mitsu dealership so it passes smog.
from the sound of it, I should ask a premium for a IX that passes smog in CA 😂😂😂

MItsubishi sent me to a tuner they knew, who happened to be my brothers tuner, to set it to factory. They wouldn't or couldn't do it 😑
Also, "shock" you're selling your Evo?? Everyone I know that sold theirs regret it. The dude who sold me his was crying Infront of me my dad and my uncle

It's $350 for my local dealership to do it. Not bad considering the headache of trying to get by without it. I can't have a tuner do it because my OG tuner lost my immobilizer code. Without that, I'm sunk. Only the dealership can help me now.
I sold my first evo.. regretted it... and now this one. I have too many cars and found a track hooker to replace it, so it has to go, yep. It's a great car, but the new one will be easier to deal with in the long run.

True, 350 is actually not too bad if you already had the recall flash done ^.

Looks like you are on your way! As long as the extra flanges are downstream (towards the back of the car) from the cat and o2 sensor, the ref should not fail you. I cannot emphasize enough the downright audacity and self-centeredness of these guys. Best of luck to you bud!

It's still relatively cheap except for the cat. I've seen stock o2 housings for $50, oem downpipes for $100 - $200, stock cat backs for $250.00, but picked up only. The cat itself? $400 to $600

That's a steal. I see cats going for $900-1000 in CA. Desperate times ...

I was digging through my storage unit yesterday. I found the OEM IX cat that I used for state inspections while I still had my Evo (along with a BNIB starter...go figure). As the Evo is long gone, I am going to put it up in the for sale section soon (or if someone in this thread still is looking, shoot me a message).

A CA ref failed you for a cat back?

That would be the case I assume.
He came out asking me "what's your mid-pipe CARB number"
Passed functional, not visual.
On the comments he wrote:
"Mid-Pipe is not approved, will need to install a CARB approved component or return to factory configurations"
