HD player will play regular dvd. I am partial to HD because of the Xbox and the extra interactive features on the discs(menus while movie is still playing, favorites, etc). People will argue about the files size is greater on blu-ray but neither format is coming close to using the capacity. The only reason Blu-ray is able to claim big numbers is because of the PS3 install base...which isn't that great to begin with. Blu-ray is outselling HD this month by like 15% though.

Blu-ray is also using the older MPEG codec for it's video, HD uses the VC1 codec. . I would wait or get a combo player to be really safe...but I'm pulling for HDDVD.

I'm on the other side of the fence to laak. I think Blu-ray is going to win out.

I don't think you'll need a seperate dvd player for regular dvd's whichever you buy.

But, I wouldn't buy either right now, I would wait for a combo as laak says or for one format to win out.

In my opinion if you have to do it, the only way to do it right now is either to buy a PS3 or xbox 360 with the HDDVD drive attachment.

FWIW the xbox is the far better gaming system right now (because of content).

I agree 100%.

I went safe and bought both gaming systems....thus far the PS3 is the biggest waste of $600 i've ever spent....at least it looks good on my tv stand though .
Now if only i had one of those black 360's instead of the original honkey version.

Yup... My xbox got the red ring of death right before halo3 and orange box came out, so I now have a purty black one, and a dead white one sitting under my desk here waiting to go back to MS...

The only thing I really use the PS3 for is Resistance, playing dvd's (because it's quieter than the xbox), and blu-ray.

Sony really had the chance to dominate the market with the PS3...they got too full of themselves and screwed the pooch.
