Sounds like we need something to cheer us up. Here's a link that has consumed GBs of my hard drive and hours of my life. I nearly dehydrated serveral times as well. Drink lots of water before visiting.

Wow. that is really crazy. I didn't know Gerald for very long, but he seemed like a great guy, and will definitely be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of his friends here.

I've read many places that he was thought not to have been wearing a seatbelt. Does anyone know if he had harnesses in the car and how they were installed. Would he have been wearing those?

not sure if you saw any pics of the car, but I personally dont think any kind of harness, or airbag system would have saved him. His car was very messed up.

You would be surprised how many people live through horrendous accidents because of their seatbelt use. 99 times out of 100, when you are thrown from the car, you die.

He had a sparco harness bar in his car, with a harness. Had he been wearing that, he would have very well been dead as well. The roof had come down to the top of the seat, meaning that his head would have been crushed as well.
Had he been wearing his seatbelt, he would have stayed with the car, and my guess is that he would have at least made it to the hospital.
Another point to be made, I really hate the idea of harness bars, with the exception of an auto-x event. It's a really, really dumb idea in any situation where there is even a .00001% chance of a rollover.

The area by the seats was for the most part, still intact. The only issue was the smashed down roof by the head, but a 3pt seatbelt would have allowed his body to pivot out of the way.
Most likely, it was the ejection that doomed him. Estimates show that his body flew over 100 feet to its resting spot, breaking a tree branch over 10ft in the air and crashing through a 4" diameter wooden post (which was broken into 2 pieces), into a field area.

I still cant see why he had to drive 100mph on that road??? Even doing 50mph is fast enough for that stretch.

From standing at the top of the hill and walking the debris trail... 100mph is a very ultra-conservative estimate.
From the impact to where his body ended up was almost 2 football fields.
And seeing the car flew approximately 50ft in the air, my guess is that he was in excess of 120-130mph.
