So, dumb question, and I'm sure there are answers on the forum, but I'm lazy and I've got good resources here to exploit so please answer the question if you'd like to for me.
If running tires at 42PSI for racing gives you better performance on track, and I drive the car kinda hard all the time, what is the downfall of leaving the tire pressure that high all the time?

Ride comfort. The higher tire pressure is a stiffer ride.
Also, having a stiffer tire makes it easier to puncture because the tire can't "squish" out of the way as easily.

What would happen if you hit a nasty pothole running at that pressure?

Just for reference: For autocross I set my front tires at 45psi and the backs at 43psi. I leave them that way for the street because I have noticed the improved handling on the street.

If you have too much pressure, the rubber cannot flex and you hit the pothole edge really hard which could cause a blow-out or cut the tire on the edge of the pavement.
