ice racing?
anyone go ice racing in WI this year? I went a couple years back and I'm looking to go again. Anyone have any info? I see January 7-8th on http://www.w-a-g.org/
If anyone is interested in going, let me know. I plan on taking the IX out and possibly getting some studded tires on smaller brakes/rims. It should be a blast!

I will be going to all FVSCC's events on Lake Winnebago (with the exception of possibly the first one). We will if the ice is thick enough on January 8th and continue every Sunday (and probably a couple of Saturdays) until the weather stops us.
Here is a video of an event from last year http://www.fvscc.com/winnebagoiceracing.wmv
More information at www.fvscc.com
I made my studded tires already. Attached is a work in progress pic.

Yes, you would be in a snow-tire AWD class. I raced a lot on snow tires last year when my studded tires leaked, and it's still a whole lot of fun, and I think very good for improving your winter driving skills in a 'safe' environment.
I tend to have a competitve nature though, and the 80 mph drifts across the lake that studs on an evo allows is a rush like no other.

Here are instructions I wrote about what I did this year.
For screw tires.
1 - Take a set of tires.
2 - Figure out how many screws you want to put in them.
3 - Figure out where the screws are going to go. (I did this by counting the number of tread blocks around the tire and figuring out how many screws were going into each tread block)
3b - Paint the inside of each tire white. After we started, a circle track racer suggested this it keeps the inside of the tire nice and bright and is easy to see what you are doing. Sounds like a good idea to me.
4 - Mark off where the screws are going to go. (I did this by drilling itty bitty holes from the outside in)
5 - Measure your how thick the tire is, I did this by poking a tiny stick through one of the holes I drilled.
6 - Go and buy the screws. You want them to be about 1/4" longer then the thickness of your tire, and pretty pointy. You want them to be coarse threaded and you want them to be pretty thick (the last two are only my opinion). I got 3/4" triple coated decking screws from menards, they are a number 12 size I think and use a square drive head. They were around $16.50 for a 5lb box, the box says on it how many screws are estimated to be in a lb. My recommendation would be to try to avoid coated screws that use a square drive because the coating sometimes seems to bubble or collect in the drive hole making the bit hard to fit in there. Unfortunately it is difficult to find 3/4", sharp, thick, coarse threaded screws in bulk.
7 - Find some sucker to help you screw the screws in, and get screwing.
8 - Spread some tire slime evenly inside the tire, you don't need much because as you spread it it will kinda collect around the screw heads.
9 - Find someone who doesn't value the skin on their hands to mount and attempt to balance the tires for you (mine are back from mounting and balancing now, apparently they were not hard to balance).
10 - Get REALLY excited waiting for ice racing season to start.
