Kane sheriff's police re-creating crash that killed 3, hurt 2

Lt. Pat Gengler, Kane County sheriff's spokesman, said an accident reconstruction team was working Sunday to re-create the wreck, which happened about 3:30 a.m. in the westbound lane of Dietrich Road, just north of Interstate Highway 90.

Investigators also were trying to determine whether the five men were wearing seat belts and if alcohol or drugs played a part.

"Investigators are trying to find out why the car left the road and hit a tree," Gengler said. "Why were these five people on that road at that place at that time? We had five people involved, and at least three ... can't tell us what happened."

Zohair Husain, 18, of Huntley and his brother, Kumail Husain, 20, died in the crash. Both were graduates of Huntley High School and students at Harper College in Palatine.

Ayush Joshi, 20, of Hoffman Estates also was killed.

Hospital representatives said Sunday that the two injured men were still listed in critical condition. Mohammed Jaffrie, 24, of Crystal Lake, who was driving the car, was in Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Henry Onwualu, 19, of Huntley was in the neuro-critical-care unit in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Friends and family remembered the Husain brothers as sweet, friendly and religious.

Nearly 35 relatives, many of whom had traveled from Oregon, California and Canada, gathered inside a family home in Algonquin to mourn the Husain brothers and console their grieving parents, who had not spoken, slept or eaten since hearing the news.

"They are not even accepting it," said Zehra Zafer, the brothers' aunt. The brothers also have a 14-year-old sister.

The brothers never drank alcohol or smoked cigarettes, Zafer said.

Zafer said she did not know where the brothers were coming from that evening but believed they may have been returning to Jaffrie's house to pick up their car.

Syed Zafer, the brothers' uncle, said Kumail Husain befriended Jaffrie about six months ago at Harper.

The family, originally from Pakistan, moved to Chicago about two years ago to give the children a better education, Syed Zafer said.

While attending Huntley High, Kumail Husain was an honor student and played on the varsity soccer team. After Harper, he hoped to attend Northwestern University for business, relatives said.

Zohair Husain had plans to attend a medical school in the Caribbean, where his best friend recently relocated, said a high school classmate, Latisha Cornelius of Lake in the Hills.

"He'll be greatly missed," Cornelius said. "He was laid-back and real easy to get along with and talk to. He was just so optimistic and he really valued people's friendships."

David Corey worked with Kumail Husain at United Marketing Group in Schaumburg for a few months last year before Kumail left to attend college.

Corey, 21, of Sleepy Hollow remembered his friend enjoying video games and frequenting hookah lounges.

"He was just one of those people; he didn't have any flaws," Corey said. "He was one of those people who wanted to do something better than everybody else. When you were hanging out with him, you had to be on top of your game. He was going somewhere. He had a real big future."

Corey, who also knew Zohair Husain and Jaffrie, said he was stunned to hear about his friends' deaths. "They were just really peaceful people," he said.

Zohair Husain also valued his religious beliefs, Cornelius said, recalling a time when she asked him to a school dance for Indian and international students, which he declined due to his strict Muslim beliefs.

"My last conversation with him was Thursday," she recalled. "We were talking about college and possibly getting together to hang out."

They just announced on the news today that Henry died, leaving the death toll at 4 and the sole survivor the driver, who is still listed in critical condition. The pics from the news looked like an Infinity G35, but the car was on its side and badly wrecked, so it was hard to tell. Speed was obviously a factor. This is sad, but I'm glad to hear that Syed wasn't involved. Be safe out there.
