GLD needs a show of support tonight in Union Grove
I was just emailed this by the staff at chitownracing, and thought it would be appropriate to repost here, especially since so many folks here race at GLD:
I won't be able to make it, so the least I can do is spread the word a bit. A small suggestion for anyone attending: be very civil, listen to what people have concerns about and address those if you stand up to say something, and try not to arrive dressed like an emo-goth boy-racer.
There will be a meeting on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 at 6:00PM, held at the Town Hall for the Town of Paris located at 16607 Burlington Rd, Union Grove, WI. This meeting will be in regards to a study of noise and light pollution alleged to eminate from Great Lakes Dragaway. If you can possibly make it to this meeting, we would GREATLY appreciate it! We need as many fans of GLD as possible. We are sorry for the short notice, as the town scheduled this meeting with very little advance notice. Tell EVERYONE you know who is either a racer or a fan of the sport! This is VERY important and we need your support!!

Thanks for posting this up, Ed.
As far as what it's about, my guess is that they are going to try and limit the hours that they are running at the very least. . . or someone's upset that the house they built within eyeshot of a racetrack gets noise from that racetrack.

Update: apparently there was a very good turnout from the racers, with the room itself packed, and the hallways outside overflowing as well. I'm passing this along second-hand, so forgive me if I get some of the details wrong.
The engineering company that took measurements (4000' from the track itself) saw 90dB peaks on Labor Day (w/nostalgia funny cars), and 50dB peaks (with higher spikes that were attributed to a nearby lawnmower) two weeks later. The noise in the meeting room with everyone in it was 65dB, for comparison. The engineering company basically said they don't see a problem.
One township board member was concerned about a noise policy impacting local farming, as common farming activity can produce noise in easily the same ranges.
No action was taken last night, although I suspect builder activity will probably cause this issue to come up again.
