New Shop in Streamwood, IL
Just FYI, there's a new shop that I've been scoping out that doesn't charge ridiculous prices...MXPi Tuning in Streamwood, IL. Recently, I bought a polyurethane bushing kit for my rear diff but didn't have a press to push out the stock bushings myself. I called 2 local shops which I won't name and they wanted $200-225 to do this. I called the guys at MXPi and they quoted me 2 hrs (at $75/hr = $150). They ended up finishing 15 minutes early and charged me $131 TOTAL.
But the price wasn't even the best part, when they finished they took me to the back to show me the work done as they torqued everything down. As they were lowering my car, I spoke with their manager and master mechanic (who apparently has like a hundred ASE certifications and also drifts an RX-7) about other services and upgrades I wanted done. They told me straight up that I was wasting my money and gave me better and less expensive alternatives that saves me a few hundred $$$ that I would have probably spent in their shop. I am honestly impressed by this experience and I know that I’m a picky *** customer as I've been to just about every shop in the area since I bought my Evo 5 years ago. Sorry for the long paragraphs but just thought I’d share…

"They told me straight up that I was wasting my money and gave me better and less expensive alternatives that saves me a few hundred $$$ that I would have probably spent in their shop." Can you specify what you were planning on doing vs what they suggested?

My bad, shoulda been more specific...lets start with maintenance. I flush all my fluids every 2 years because I'm a paranoid fanatic. Their mechanic popped open my radiator cap and checked the conductivity of my coolant. He took the time to explain to me that my coolant was still very much serviceable. He told me that a drain and fill would be adequate if I was adamant about replacing it. Same with the brake fluid, I religiously flush it out with Motul since my calipers started to fade. Their mechanic dipped some kind of strip into my master cylinder to check the corrosiveness of the fluid and said that it was still optimally serviceable. How many shops would share that with you and give you the option to save??
Ok, lets move on to upgrades. I told them that I was gonna buy an AMS stainless steel braided clutch line which runs like $65. They told me that Goodridge sells the exact same line for half the price and a lifetime warranty. I thought that maybe they were tryin to sell me Goodridge until I found out that they don't even sell the brand yet. They said that they're working on getting another distributor by the end of the month. But they showed me where I can get it online for cheap. And we went on about other stuff like wheel bearings, big brake kits, and etc. This honesty in addition to their cheap $75/hr labor rate puts them at the top of my list...
