Manual shifting hard downshifts.

Hey everyone.

When you all downshift manually, is it always smooth? A lot of the time when I am shifting down to 2nd or 1st gear it shifts really hard, like it almost bangs into gear. I have tried downshifting at all different RPMs. Sometimes at 2k, others at 1.5k. This is all when I am coming to a stoplight or stop sign.

I even just did the 30k maintenance, so new fluid and filter.

This was happening even before the maintenance.

Is this normal? Should I take it to the dealer and show them?

Get bent tool. Grab a different forum to post ***** in cause common sense would prevail about "double clutching" in an MR SST.

To the poster - Why are you downshifting when you are coming to a stop anyway. If you just apply the break, even when you are in Manual Mode, the tranny will shift down automatically. If its a red light you can shift it into the right gear if the light turns green on you. If its a stop sign and you aren't doing a California Roll through once your speed is decreased you'll be set in 1 anyway. You shouldn't need to downshift as if you were driving a GSR or regular clutched out manual. If you do that's a good recipe to be in the market for a new transmission in no time, from the warnings I have been giving from folks that are more in tune with the MR SST. Just my .02 though. I am sure others might have others things to speak up about but my suggestion is to avoid doing the hard downshifting when coming to a stop.

Alright, thanks! I wasnt aware of this. I never really messed around in manual mode that much until this past month.

I don't remember ever downshifting to 1st when I had the Ralliart, but if you're coming to a stop sign or stoplight, why not try letting it downshift itself? Or don't shift that far down?

I just wasn't aware that it auto downshifted in manual mode.

Well now you know However I have 13,000 on mine and even if i let the car downshift on its own sometimes the downshift is hard, I tried multiple times to replicate it but i cant do it on command however it does happen once in a while. I think it is just nature of the beast sometimes you can catch it off guard like when coasting to a stop like a red light and you timed the light so when you get back on the gas you can make it confused I dont know I love my MR but sometimes I think it knows more than me and conspires to keep me intrigued

OP, what happens if you try SPORT/AUTO mode and coast down to a near-stop? How smooth/rough is the automatic downshift to 1st gear then?

If it's rough (ie. "bangs" into 1st gear), take it to the dealer. Tell them to test-drive SPORT/AUTO w.r.t. its standard downshifting into 1st.

I realise you're asking about MANUAL mode, and that SPORT/AUTO is a rarely-used mode that doesn't suit much at all. But it's an excellent diagnostic tool in this circumstance.

Rich

PS. If your ECU has been modified by a tuner (trying to "reduce SST clutch slip" or "improve throttle response"), forget all the above and start by getting the SST-related tables of the tune reviewed. Bumped up values in SST tables can most definitely cause it to crash its way through upshifts and downshifts in a very unpleasant manner. You didn't mention any such tuning... I'm just saying...
