I have things underway with Shep, and although he doesn't have my tranny yet, he said the same thing. He explained how the imperfections of the gears themselves and the overheated fluid cause the teeth to pull on one another when disengaging instead of just easily sliding apart. Eventually, all this pressure of pulling the teeth breaks them right off. The way he explained it is exactly how mine felt when it happened. It was like all the teeth were sheared right off all at once and then there was no gear left to engage.

Seems like Bryan and I had the same failure, but I'll know for sure after my tranny arrives at Shep. He also is not confident in the 6spd itself even with strengthening but will try every trick in the book to provide me with strong gears while keeping the fluid as cool as possible during road racing. He mentioned that the BGII I was using was terrible for the 6spd, fwiw.

Yea I am really leaning on going back to stock fluid.

This is not good news, I'm wondering what the solution is going to be. I really don't want to drop a different tranny in the car.

Shep says he builds the AMS road racing trannies, and they are 5 speeds. When they come back for refreshing or after the fluid overheats, he says he never has to replace anything, because everything is still beautiful. Not the case on the 6spd. He would rather me get a 5spd, but it's a tough choice. I love having that 5th gear, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

Bryan, I will AT LEAST use the stock fluid, but Shep recommended something called Neo RHD? Haven't looked it up yet...

This?

If I had the money in this point in time I would be getting a 5spd. Its a bit more than just getting a 5spd though because of the shifter, cables, mounts ,etc.

If I break the 6spd again I will for sure be getting a 5spd, or a automatic mustang v6.

isn't it possible to replace the helical gears with straight cut gears? They'd be noisier, but straight cut are stronger.. I wonder if anyone even offers them...

I suspect it is going to be a thorn in the side. It is a weak design from the factory. I have plenty of experience with weak sauce trannies having broken about 4 of them in my SE-R under racing conditions. The best solution we could come up with to our weak SE-R trannies is to use Redline Shockproof Heavy gear oil and run stock like clutch and pressure plate. Basically an organic clutch and a pressure plate that is about 30% stiffer than stock. That helped a lot, but people still break their SE-R trannies.

IMO, if you break your 6 speed take out out and throw it away. Do not waste your money fixing it, since it will break again. Unless Jon is going to swap gears with dog ear gears, then I do not see how he will be able to remedy a design flaw. All he can do is cryotreat and shot peen the gears in order to give them a bit more strength. But your tranny will break again.

Spend the money on a 5 speed now rather than spend money on the 6 speed and then break it and then get a 5-speed.

can you put a 5-speed in an MR? Im assuming its possible but wouldn't have the slightest idea what would need to be changed...
