Whatever the cost of a new 4th gear. I'm up for donating money and agree could be a big plus for MR owners down the road.

About $150 is needed to purchase a new 4th gear and ship it to me so that I can compare it with razorlab's broken 4th gear. Willing participants so far:

1) mrfred, $10
2) mike01gsr, $10
3) Steve_P, $10
4) SRT-TO-EVO, $10
5) Wheelhaus, $10

Getting closer...

Angry 4th gear just went today and it was only 39 degrees out?

I lost 4th today at a track event. I was only on my 2nd or 3rd lap and it went after I started to pull in 4th. The temp outside was only 39 degrees so it's hard to believe that things were overtemp.

The damage may have already been done from previous events and waited until today to show up I'm runing around 345whp on 285 kumho's with an Exedy Twin disc, this is about the 7th track event with this car (2005MR).

Wish someone knew for sure what the fix is as I need a reliable fix for TT next season.

Sorry to hear TrakMnky, but welcome to the club.

What Transmission fluid where you using at the time and how many miles on that fluid?

I'm finally getting my tranny cooler in the car so I will have the write up soon.

My solution was to switch to a beefy 5spd with special gearing.

I have a lot of experience with weak transmissions. The 91-98 SE-R practically invented the term "this tranny is a pile."

Your best bet is to do what Warr has done, ie, switch to a 5 speed tranny. This is the cheapest and result guaranteed route.

Your second choice is to put an oil cooler on the 6-speed tranny and run thick-as-molasses Redline Shockproof heavy gear oil. Also run a stock clutch. Anything stiffer might shock those 4-6 very small gears. The results, however, are not guaranteed and you maybe wasting your money. I suspect that you will have a broken tranny using this route.

The last choice is the most expensive. Get a straight cut gearset for the 6-speed. This is also guaranteed to work, but is expensive as hell and your tranny will be so loud you will have to wear ear plugs j/k.

Out of all the three choices, I will pick the first choice. The 5-speed tranny is the one to go with unless you do not want to track your MR anymore.

Warr, I think you made the best choice. Even though it is more expensive than fixing the 6-speed, in the long run it will save you a lot of money.

In my case, the cost to fix my 6spd, which was trashed, would have been more than getting a remanufactured Shep-built 5spd, but that was only because of how badly damaged my 6spd was...

Count me in for $10. I want to track my MR more often. I don't have any mods yet but just the possibility of not switching to a 5 spd is worth finding out what's causing 4th to fail.

C'mon track ******...
