Has anyone ever though of trying to fashion a heat shield or putting some insulatory material between the transmission and the downpipe. I haven't gotten under there yet to see what kind of clearences between the two there are but i am sure that the downpipe does radiate some heat and get the underside of the tranny hot.

It would be possible to fabricate a simple heat shield that just clamps onto the DP with some straps, like good T-bolt intercooler straps. Otherwise I'd say get it coated because you wouldn't take up any room for clearance.
The DP fitment is already super tight around the front crossmember, so (in that area) it would be difficult to manage. Those with the stock DP already have a heatshield.
