Some dp (e.g. WORKS) you can buy already coated. I had mine thermal barrier coated afterwards, but to be honest I couldn't tell you if it made a difference or not.

BTW, I saw that Power Enterprise makes an upgraded gear set for the 6MT (http://www.power-enterprise.co.jp/transmission.html). Something to consider if you're rebuilding your tranny anyway.

I'm gonna swaintech my ttp dp before I put it on. These threads are starting to scare me because I do about 8 HPDE a year and I couldnt resist a black mr, so I'm gonna try and work through this like the rest of you. Hopefully we can get a cost effective tranny cooler and other goodies to make this work.

If it blows I'll just ship it out to Jon, but I really dont want to have to do that if I dont have to.


Do you guys think it would be a cheaper/easier rebuild with the tranny still in good condition or wait til it blows?

The DP is right next to the TC, not the trans.

I've heard the 4th gear from the 5sp is physically larger and beefier than the one from the 6 - i.e. it won't fit.

I think he was talking about the VIII 6MT vs. the IX 6MT - interesting question. Do we know if the IX tranny will bolt up to an VIII? I wonder what the differences are (other than the part no.).

5sp parts will NOT fir the 6sp and vice versa. The shaft spacing is 10mm different and thus will not mesh correctly. According to GEARS the 6sp spacing is 10mm closer. This also increases tooth face pressure as an added jab in the gut.

The IX 6sp (as far as I know) is unchanged from the VIII 6sp. Unless someone could prove otherwise, I believe swapping parts would be futile.

This whole tranny problem is quite depressing, i just bought my 05' MR last weekend with intent to road race. So besides power enterprises, Any one else make gear stacks to perhaps fix this. Are the usdm MR gears the same as the jdm gears. Besides ratios maybe stronger. I used to be an avid se-r fan, but i thought i was done with tranny faliure.

if you follow my post #311, the coordsport checklist for tranny parts show a bigger 4th gear for the IX 6 speed if fireballs part numbers are correct

That is an interesting thing to investigate.

Lets start a poll of the broken 6spd's 4th gear and see if we can locate mileage, fluid type used, type of driving, 2005 or 2006 and see if we can further pinpoint anything important.

What I do know is that pre-June '03 5spds have a smaller 5th gear than the June/'03+ Evo 5spds just to throw out some data on the other trans.

so when you guys say "bigger" do you mean different gear ratio or same ratio and more material to make it stronger? Also would there be room in the VIII 6MT to fit a "beefier" IX 4th gear? There may be some hope for tracking the 6MT after all ...

"bigger" means "fatter". The problem is the witdh is a scant 14mm. The ratio would undoubtedly be the same but the profile would be meatier to make it stronger. Let's hope this is the case wih the IX MR's, we're just waiting official measured confirmation from someone who has torn apart a IX MR tranny.

From what I've gathered, the 5sp and the 6sp share the same case width, so the 6sp gear profiles are narrowed to cram in the 6th gear. If the IX tranny has been "updated" then the gear profiles were likely thickened for the upper gears, and thinned for the lower gears so they'll all still fit into the same space. This is a hugely optimistic guess, though.
