The biggest difference from an MR user is the missing link. From 4th to 5th is a substantial jump with the 5sp.

In 6th gear you're cruising ~300rpm lower then in 5th gear in the 5spd. Assuming the OEM FD and OEM tire size.

For now guys, if you seriously track your Evo, put a cooler on it regardless of what gear oil you use.
Would you say that a transmission cooler is necessary for a 5sp as well?

I don't track my car, but I do beat on it. Probably no where as near as some of you guys do though. Possibly tracking it in the future when I have more $$ to play around with. I'm about to change all my drivetrain fluids pretty soon. I'm gonna stick with OEM fluids and just change it more often.

A temperature sensor would be kinda neat just to know what temperatures it is actually reaching.

I would love a track guy with a temp gauge to run the Castrol Syntorq I have been running in the tranny and compare it to the OEM fill temp wise.

I thought TRE has a solution for this problem...

Since I got the car in 06 I have been averaging 20 trackdays per season..so currently I have over 50 track days on my 6 speed with no issues so far. I haven't put a trans cooler on the car yet. I drive it on the street and back and forth to the tracks and the car has 36K miles. I removed the Mitsu fluids after break-in and have been running Silkolene products in the engine and trans/diffs since. Pete

How often do you change out fluid? And what kind of power are you making?

we have another client that did ALOT of running on his 6 speed, and never had an issue until he broke the shift fork by shifting it too hard.

we've never had a 6 speed related failure aside of that.

And I've gone through two 6 speeds. A factory unit, then a TRE rebuilt unit. Both units had fluid changed after every event.

Now on 5 speed and haven't looked back.

That is the route I went, I bought the MR unaware of the faulty tranny. Luckily my friends evo was getting repoed.... hahah

First mod for my evo was a intake filter, second... 5 speed swap! LOL

Just read this whole thread and its scary to think about. Would love to hear from 6spd FQ owners who track em...if they exist. It would be funny if the Top Gear FQ400 blew up on the show.

About 20 pages into this post, I decided the 6 speed is not the way to go, and I probably should steer away from an MR model. The next 35 pages only helped support this.

Good information!

Good information!
Keep in mind over half the IX's sold were MR's so it is easier to find an MR, plus the MR does have some advantages over the GSR like the aluminum roof/fenders.

It's hard as hell to find a clean IX so doing the transmission swap if/when it fails might be easier than ruling out all the MR's
