Sorry to defibrillate this thread, but can you rebuild a 6 speed into a 5 speed? Or do you need 5 speed trans/tcase?

I dont ever track my MR, but if 4th every crapped out on the highway or whatever, obviously i'll be replacing with 5 speed.

Totally different transmission. To swap the 5-spd into an MR you actually need a $450 conversion kit as well.

Not really, although I just bought mine from Shep with new gearing and REM treatment. Of course I managed to blow my 5th gear syncros on the built transmission after running 20 sessions over 2 days at my last track event.

Damn that sucks. You cant just purchase a built 5 speed can you? without a core to replace or have rebuilt?

Yes you can, thats what I did. It's more money obviously than if you have a core you can use.

since this thread has been defibbed....

mrfred - did you ever install your gearbox temp gauge? Interested to know what temps you are seeing with it.

I never did, and my motor now makes more than enough power to kill a 6-speed, so I'm moving onto a 5-speed. Its too bad, my gearbox is shifting better now than when I bought the car new six years ago. Guess it takes that long to break in the synchros...

Fair enough. I limit boost to ~20psi in 4th-6th to protect it as much as I can, but it's obviously slower than it could be as a result.

its may not be so hard to find someone with a good 5 speed to trade with.
I may consider doing a swap with a 6speed since I probably will not be putting the car in situations that someone else would. i am sure there are others like me out there.

that way both people will benefit from having all the parts for the swap. its just having someone local or else shipping stuff will be too much of a headache

FYI, I am bumping this thread because someone linked to it in the Shep thread. My original 6 speed now has 167,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. I have used the Castrol SynTorq LT exclusively since 12,000 miles. I have an upgraded Shep 6 speed going in soon, but that's only because I don't want to blow it up with a 2.3.

Oh, and my 2nd gear still doesn't grind. I heart Castrol SynTorq LT.

But that's why I am getting the Shep tranny. So I can take her on the track without worrying I'm gonna blow ish up.
