The goal of 400kph seems a bit unimpressive to me based on the fact the the McLaren F1 road car did 386.7kph in full street trim back in March of 1998, the Koenigsegg CCR in street trim went 388kph 2005, and the Bugatti Veyron exceeded 400kph in street trim in 2005...
450kph sounds to me like a more worthy aspiration for an F1 car on a slat flat...

True, they sure sucks this year. It's kindda mystifying why they're so bad. They always look tremendous in testing, but come the race, all that pace seems to evaporate.
Anyway, I respect what they're doing. I mean, it's more relevant to racing than say getting bigger hospotality tents for their vip's andhopefully they will learn something about aero in addition to what they already know.
Incidentally, they've just commissioned a new wind tunnel capably of taking a full-scale F1 car at speed >200mph. Cool...

But yes, all in all, 400kph isn't all that impressive. On the other hand, it shows what an acheivement the CCR, The McLarenF1 and the Veyron really are.

Very true indeed. And yes, I think that does put it into a better perspective. More for research and testing the car in spec...that looks much better than a simple top speed goal.

Besides, they're doing it on 2.4L (if they're using last year, that will be 3.6L) - so looking at it that way, it's quite impressive.

^How many liters and how many cylinders was the Mclaren F1....... Granted real F1 cars are lighter and far more developed they still accomplish a whole lot with a little package.

Specific output and number of cylinders is beside the point regarding total power output vs top speed. A street bodied car producing 627bhp doing 240mph. It took the C5 Corvette over 750bhp to do a mere 223mph in street trim.
Compare that to a fighter jet with wheels making over 800?bhp. Of course with gearing and aero changes we know the F1 platform would do much more. But the point was not the engine size and hp/liter...the point was the accomplishment of a street car that transports 3 people and their luggage doing 240mph on street tires with only 627bhp output.
Again this is off topic...so I'll wish the BAR team all the best and leave it at that.

ok, at first i thought the concept was cool - run a modified but race legal f1 at bonneville. but then they added a rudder - which is illegal - and it just totally changes everything. what's the point?
