If size is an issue and you need four doors, try a Cadillac CTS-V. Essentially a 4-door Corvette using the engine (400HP) and drive train (6-speed manual) from a Z06 Corvette (the C5 not the new C6). Comfortable and stealthy!

A Z06 on track is a beast of a car. You don't actually have to mod them extensively: just tires, pads and massive driver upgrade to go insanely fast.
The M3 would be a car that you'd love off the track as much as you do on the track.
The Evo is a bare bones four door sports car. If you can live with a Z06 yet want 4 doors, this would be the car to get it. Jury is still out on reliability, however.

I love my Evo on the track. The controls are outstanding. Pedals, gearbox, steering inputs are all how they should be. Much better than my old M3 which never felt great from a controls perspective and even with all sorts of mods it just felt heavy.
Z06 is a lot of bang for the buck though. 400hp is 400hp.

I'd get a regular non-z06 and put a supercharger on it. Then you'll embarrass the z06 guys too! I've come across a supercharged c6 (non-z06) that left me from 60mph like he was leaving a stoplight. Sickest thing I've ever seen on the road... er... track!

Depends what you want.
Evo= fast out of the box, easy to mod and go fast on track with good reliability
Z06= not easy to drive fast but with a good T1 setup and good tires and practice is hard to beat. top T1 drivers will spank most well driven modded evos.

For a "weekend" car, get the Z06. For a daily driver, get the Z06 unless you need to carry anything in the car, like...kids, groceries, crap from Home Depot, etc. Consider those things not just for today, but for the length of time you plan to own this vehicle. A lot can change in a few years...If you can't count on the wife/gf's vehicle every timefor those tasks, then the Z06 probably isn't for you. Pick one of the sedans. If $$$ is not an issue, the M3 has the edge in displacement and style, but lacks AWD. If cheap speed is your goal, the Evo can't be beat. Mods are reasonably cheap and effective. Whatever you choose, good luck and enjoy your new ride.

Z06 ... hands down. To keep up with a Z06 you have to mod the EVO, that says a lot right there ... Plus the Z06 looks like a sports car.
Although there is something to be said about a slightly modded EVO keeping up with a Corvette

Thank you for all the suggestions, I think the next logical step is to get some seat time in all three.

as for comfort the evo wins hands down.
i am 6', 365 lbs and fit very well in the evo. the more comfortable you are in a car the faster you will go.
vettes are great but are kind of cramped imo. after time you might get backpain or soreness from jumping in the vette day after day. no such problems with the evo.
