Rim size question

I'm pickin up an 06 MR right after the new year and plan on tracking it. I've been looking at what wheels to buy for it and can't decide if I should go with 18 or 17. Also if I should go with 8.5 or 9.

On my current car that I track, 95 m3, I run 17x8.5 all around with 245/40. My previous car to that was an 03 MINI that I ran 205/45 on 17x7.5 all around, there was always a debate on 205 vs 235, less weight/less grip to more weight/more grip.

What rim/tire size combo do most of you run? What are the pros/cons of the different.

You can go w/ 18x9.5 wheels w/ 285 tires. See Navid's evo w/ the CCWs.

BTW, if you're going to get an evo to use at the track, get one w/ the 5-spd tranny!

2 good choices

1. 17x9; 255x40 w/Toyo RA1 - stock rotor size
2. 18x9.5; 285x30 w/ a few nice options - able to upgrade to a BBK

Best of luck

There is no best. You need to get the car and pick a racing venue before worrying about rim and tire sizes, because the class you choose will determine what you should use. I personally use 18X9.5s with 285/30-18 like Meanmud mentioned, but that's not necessarily the "best." It's the best for what I'm doing and in the classes I'm in (SCCA SM/NASA TTS), but you couldn't use these in many other classes (SCCA AS/STU, NASA TTC/TTB/TTA, etc.).

Anyway, here's what my setup looks like - it requires major fender rolling and proper spacers:

do they come in a size that'll allow 255's or whatever to fit under unrolled fenders?

Here's my write-up:

http://www.evotuners.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1517

I think they may be available in 17" sizes, but you wouldn't want to get the ones I have, which are 18X9.5, and put a small tire on them. It would be a waste.

I am a new user and i am starting to mod an 04 ralliart. it has 16 in rims on it already and i was considering to put 17's on it and i was wondering if larger diameter rims would cause any damge

Damage to what? You may want to ask in the tire/rim section to get more answers, since this is the Motor Sports section.

255/40/17 RA-1s fit just fine on the stock 17 x 8 wheels. I have 2 sets of stock wheels (Enkei for RS, not BBS for MR, but they are the same size), and have run about a gazillion track days. I spent $100 each for the second set used. Why spend lots of money on wheels when there are so many other necessary track expenses that can't be avoided?

If you want to go to a 275 or wider tire then you have no choice, but it's really not necessary unless you are competing and a high level.

Like Richard said, if you just want to do track days, go for 17s because then you can fit 255/40-17 RA1s which are cheap for R-compounds. Some BBKs will fit under 17s also.
