Audi Stage III vs. Evo RS
Need some help from the evo camp, I have a 2001 s4 with about 70K mile, bone stock, i was going to upgrade it to Stage III specs, run me about $10K. Anyways, I like to do 2 to 6 track events per year and was planning on running the audi. I love the audi interior, smoothness and stage III power with good suspension will get me in the low 12s and hopefully decent handling. I saw the recent ads for evo rs for about $26000. First I understand the rs is missing abs, no power windows locks, no sunroof and 5 speed. All these things sound great. Will a stock rs run down my audi on the track, if so, i think i will sell the audi for $15, save on the parts and get a new car. Give some reasonably unbiased opinions as a car enthusiast, mind you, i also have a 996TT and s2000. thanks.

Yes it will
stage 3 S4 is what? chip, exhaust? like 320 hp crank. S4 handles like a boat compared to Evo RS but can probably be setup nice with good suspension and you'd most likely need RS4 ko4 turbos to even keep up with a mildly modded one. i dont know though ive driven only a stock S4 2.7TT and a stock evo ix rs. but i do know my evo mr with $2K in mods would eat a stock S4 for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner.

Twin Turbo S4 can be insanely fast! I seem not to be able to beat my friend that owns two of them! (forgot to mention they are chipped S4 with exhaust and all the other extras)

dont be so sure of that... I used to follow Audi's very closely since i had a 225TT with the K04 on it. Check this guy out.. http://www.buehnengineering.com/
He does custom HYBRID K04's port/polish clipped wheels bigger compressor wheels ect and they make MAD HP out of the S4's since they are Twin Turbo.. He is not OVER PRICED either like APR and the few other tuners like Dahlback and Del Rio who also make Turbo kits for audi's... Granted they are alot heavier, but there are alot of people who have them down a fair amount in weight. ATP also sells kits but they are kinda rubbish.. Comfort wise i miss my Audi, performance per dollar i love my evo..
RS=track car deff.
S4= Occasional track car, mostly a brutal DD.
prolly the fastest wagon in the world lol

good example of a nicely modded S4

Again, your preference.... Good luck

That's a lot of money dump into the S4 just to match a lightly mod'd RS, and plus it's a 70k miles German which potentially mean much higher mechanial or electrical failure than a much newer RS, given both cars are maintained responsibly. Plus, you have quite a bit of weight to work on...more weight, less hp/weight ratio, worse handling, more wear and tear etc.

6 speed of course, i still like to row the gears
yes the s4 would be the full rs 4 conversion with K04s, most of these with fueling will run low 12s, 400 plus hp. Will an RS with basic mods, chip, bolt ons ect be quick enough. I would probably use it as a dd for about a year until I get the used a8 as the dd, the s2000 is not a great DD and the porsche im hanging onto for nicer days(plus too much attention, everyone wants to beat the p-car), then retire the evo to a full track machine. I am looking at the southcoast pricing, $26000 seems hard to look away, its just a bit far from ohio.
I am pleased with the mature and open replies, i wasnt sure about posting thanks.

One thing for sure if you decide to DD the EVO....It will probably get as much as attention as the P-car...bad ones too....my EVO got keyed at the mall after only parked for 20 mins.
I have nothing against the S4, matter of fact, I still love the way B5 S4 looks...just a little much to worry about under heavier track use...

If your in Ohio and serious about buying an evo and had some questions about the evos power potential I would visit these guys.
Buschur Racing
24 West Main St.
Wakeman, OH 44889
USA
The RS is not as porky as the other evo models, comes with the proven 5 speed transmission which can withstand the abuse of long-track days, no abs/sound deadening.
Also check out the motorsports and tire/brake section of evom.net.
The audi will be more forgiving daily driving and some may not feel comfortable daily driving an evo, so I would suggest driving one around town and seeing if it fits the bill.
Here is my rough estimate
~$2,000 power mods
~$1,500 brake pads/ ss brake lines/ motul brake fluid/ brake ducts/rubber/misc.

key words there are "properly set up" and "almost anything".
on a good track surface a normally modified evo will not out run your $150k Porsche
a modified Audi, or even a well driven zo6. don't even begin to think it will play with the preped race cars.
but hexx, it is a ball to drive and offers pretty good stuff without breaking the bank.
on the other hand you can whip any car with a lame driver.
