Help Me Pick My New Tires, Please

I know there are alot of threads out there looking for the best tire for different autocross classes or for road racing. "What's the best R-compound autocross tire??" "What's the best STX/STU autocross tire??" This one's a little bit different. . .

What I need is the best (most ultimate grip) autocross tire with a 60 treadwear or greater that is available in 285/30/18 size. This eliminates the most popular choices like the Hoosier A6 and the Kumho V710 that are used in SP/SM/Stock classes, and probably makes the +140 rated tires of STX/STU classes uncompetitive.

Here are some choices I've come up with:

TIRE __________________ UTQG

Yokohama Advan A048-------- 60
Brigestone RE050A PP -------- 140
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup ------ 80
Toyo R888 ---------------------- 100 (if available)

Toyo RA-1 ---------------------- 100 (275/35/18)
Nitto NT-01 --------------------- 100 (275/35/18)
Pirelli PZero Corse ------------ 60 (295/30/18)

Basically what I want is the one that is going to handle the MOST similar to an A6 or V710. I need something that can get up to optimal temp quickly. I don't necessarily need something that will take 100 heat cycles. Let me know if I have forgotten any others worth considering. From what I've read and what I think I know about each tire, my #1 choice of these is the A048. #2 choice would be the R888. Should I be thinking differently??

Thanks!!

I didn't think they were even close to the same league as these ones as far as grip?

I already have 285/30/18 Advan Neovas for street tires. The Azenis are comparable to them . . .

And I have 285/30/18 Hoosiers and Kumhos too, but I need something in between those two. . .

I like the Nittos better than the RA-1s.

Are the Nittos and RA-1 the same compound, just the Nitto has a better tread design?? Or are they completely different in all regards?
Have you ever tested the Advan A048 vs. either of the others you mentioned?

Nitto has a much better tread design with much quicker turn in and better overall grip than the RA-1s. Im not sure about the compound difference. I cant comment on the other tires. I did run a 1:150 at CMP with ecu mods, a cat back, stock suspension and Nitto 01s. The T2 track record on dot slicks is 1:48.9 and on an STI with a fully prepped suspension.

The NT-01 carcass is the big difference. It's much more advanced than the RA1.

The Sport Cups are definately not the way to go. Those take a bit to heat up. I don't really have any good advice to give you since I have never driven on most of those tires, but I would talk to the manufacturers and see what they say about their cold grip and optimal temps and pick the one with the lowest optimal temperature range.

Honestly the RE050As might be just as good cold as the Advans or Corsas and they would definately last longer. Every autocross is different of course, the ones here in Vegas are very short and its hard to even get the Hoosier A4 (this was the latest model at the time I ran autocross) up to temp let alone a track or street tire. I only got them good and sticky if I had either a 2nd driver or I got a re-run.

There was a discussion on this topic on the SCCA Forums, apparently the NT-01 has the same compound as the RA-1 but a stiffer sidewall, and as said, better tread design. I think Toyo owns Nitto?

In any case, I ordered a set to mess around on, can't wait to try them out.

Anyone here use the Yokohama Advan A048 as a daily diving tire or street racing tire?

Well the 615's don't come in 285/30/18(what the OP stipulates in thread) afaik, unless they have come out with different tires sizes since late 06. The sizing is really holding you back.

I'm not sure how great a 285 really is. Unless you can run that 10+ in wheel the steering input on the 285 might not be as great. I realize 285's can fit a 9.5 in rim but is that the optimal? An 18x9.5 is pushing it on the evo although it can be done.

After I wear out my stock advans in a street tire class, I think a good 255 street tire on a 9 in rim will be a nice handling and feeling setup.

The RE01-R looks to be the Bg choice for 140 treadwear.

The RA-1 and NT-01 are not auto-x tires at least not real auto-x b/c they won't heat up to give performance. As you have pointed out there is little choice in that size when you need 60+ treadwear. I mean basically you are looking for a high performance street tire.

Well crap, if he is running 10 in wheels, and by the looks of his sig he's done a little bit of auto-x'ing I'm not really sure he needs help picking tires.

At least not from me.

Good luck finding a sweet tire, and let us know how the 10 inchers work, I'm jealous.
