Are you going to use the stock advans or do you have a dedicated track/tire set?
I've being using the stock setup.

However, I'm planning on getting a dedicated set of track tires/rims here pretty soon. I'm going to step up to some RA1's or similar; depending on what I can find in the for sale forums probably.

Warr.... what is your top speed in 5th now?

As you know us Wisconsin guys have Road America here..... I'm hitting over 140mph on that track.... I ABSOLUTELY HATE RUNNING WOT IN 5TH.... that lower 9-5th gear would make me feel better but then again I don't want to run out of gear either.

My top speed is whatever the top speed is for a IX. I think it's around 165 or so, but I don't know what RPM that would be. I don't ever plan to get near the top speed, so I really can't answer. I agree that I'm not fond of staying at WOT for long in 5th. At my local track, I only hit 135mph max on the straight so far, which is enough for me.

So you had Shep rebuild your box...... I had him do a DSM tranny for me and it was a bit more notchy than I prefer. How does yours shift? I'm due for a rebuild, probably gonna pull the tranny and do a clutch next month.

You could also look into bigger tires or a 4.11 final drive. Of course both of these will change your speedo, but they are probably the cheapest/most effective way to lengthen your gears

Actually, if you remember, I have an MR, so I originally had a 6spd where the teeth ripped off 4th gear while road racing. That's when I had Shep build me a 5spd that I swapped in for my busted 6spd instead of having him fix the 6spd. I actually have the 5spd from his personal Evo that he modified for me for road racing.

Notchiness is non-existent. With my Exedy Twin Carbon and this trans, shifting is not even an afterthought. I can't remember the last time I missed a gear, and I'm able to powershift any gear at anytime at any rpm with no effort. I do not do this on the road course, but it's very comforting to not ever have to think about shifting one bit when I'm road racing or autocrossing. I know how it feels to be worried about whether or not your next fast shift is going to land or not, so I'm elated to no longer experience it.

Jeff, the Evo IX 5th gear ratio is 0.761:1 ... with stock tires that puts you at approximately:

154 mph @ 7000 RPM
165 mph @ 7500 RPM
172 mph @ 7800 RPM
176 mph @ 8000 RPM

mph @ stock redline in respective gears - assuming stock tire size:

03-05 Evo VIII:
4th gear @7k = 115

05-06 Evo MR:
4th gear @7k = 104.6
5th gear @7k = 132.6

06 Evo IX:
4th gear @7k = 108

For comparison's sake:
04-'06 STi
4th gear: 98.82
5th gear: 136.99

'07 STI
4th gear: 116.99
5th gear: 136.99

Thanks! I updated the post above. In looking at the speeds, it seems like the MR gearing would be great for the tracks I run. My issue with the MR is the 500 post thread about 4th gear going out with 'Track ****** with MR's' that scares me!

I think a VIII 5-speed w/ a IX 5th gear would be pretty ideal for the track.

That's exactly what I had Shep build for me when my 6spd blew up. It was an 05 5spd with a IX 5th gear.

So you road-race a built high-revving 2.0 then? That's a definite option. Albeit an expensive one, but a safe one in the long run probably.
I did some searching on your id and found your build-up thread; nice.

I had planned awhile back to someday do a 50trim kit and a stroker; for a good balance of street and track. However, my car is doing less street and more track so that's not the best option anymore.

just arrange for 35-40 mph tailwinds in the long straights and you'll be set.

Thanks.

It started out with modest intentions and somewhere along the line mushroomed into a full build. Still scratching my head on that one ... but I'm very happy with the car as it sits right now.
