Lagemann/Williams Win Olympus Rally
FEROCIOUS BATTLE DECIDED ON FINAL STAGE
Olympia, WA (May 20, 2007) - After two days and over 125 miles of intense competition, the team of Ramana Lagemann and Mark Williams emerged triumphant in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. With a winning margin of only 4.7 seconds, the event was decided on the final stage, a rain soaked test that forced the top contenders to drive to the limit in extremely tricky conditions.
The Olympus Rally, round four of the Rally-America Championship, took place on some of the most challenging roads in the series, and featured two runs through the long 26-mile Nahwatzel stage, the final pass capping the entire event. “This rally truly was as much about strategy as it was speed,” commented Lagemann. “The roads here are punishing and mistakes usually go unforgiven. Our plan was to be smooth yet swift throughout much of the event, then really go for it on the long stages.”
Prepared by Cascade Autosport and supported by Dent Sport Garage, the team’s Mitsubishi ran faultlessly, finishing day one in a solid 3rd place overall, less than 30 seconds behind the leader. It was now crucial for Lagemann and Williams to start day two off with a bang, and they did just that. On the first run through Nahwatzel, they made their intentions clear, winning the stage by over 20 seconds and vaulting themselves into first place.
Two more stages, and another lead change: Lagemann and Williams were now in second place, 3.3 seconds behind the Subaru of Andrew Pinker. As the crew prepared for the final stage of the rally, the light rain which had been falling throughout the day intensified into a drenching downpour, adding yet another challenge to the daunting 26-mile Nahwatzel stage.
“What was a challenging section of road earlier in the day became truly diabolical with the heavy rain,” explained Lagemann. “There were enormous pools of water everywhere, just waiting to skip the car off the road and into the weeds. We had several big moments; hitting water at that speed, especially in the middle of a corner, the car aquaplanes and you are along for the ride!”
Despite the challenge, the team managed to win the stage and the rally, bringing Mitsubishi their first Rally-America win in over a year. “What an unbelievable finish, I don’t think anyone left anything on the table!” exclaimed Lagemann. “It truly was a fight down to the last second, and to win against such strong competition is immensely satisfying.”
The result also puts the team firmly into the running for a coveted qualification spot in X Games 13 this August. They hope to solidify their position at the next event in the series, the Susquehannock Trail Rally, which takes place on June 2 in Wellsboro, PA.
Coverage of The Olympus Rally is scheduled to air on Friday, July 27 at 5:00 pm EST, on ESPN2.

Jason,
The car is surprisingly very simple but very effective and light. Torque is absolutely insane with the 34mm restrictor. Dampers and gearbox is Sellholm of Sweden. Brakes are AP 298mm 4 piston all around. Autronic management calibrated by the Autronic master Ian Hamwood. Its pretty much the business.
