RT615's arrived; dayum they are wide!
My second set of advans will likely run out of tread after 1 more weekend, and I have some rt615's (255's) sitting in the garage for afterwards. Man they are wide! measuring from bead to bead they are 9.25 inches. No wonder everyone is recommending a 9 inch wheel for these.
I am not buying more new rims, so my stock rims will just have to do. I guess folks have been having reasonable success with them on stock rims.
by looking at the size of the treadblocks, I don't think they'll dissipate heat very well. I hope they'll be ok for a beginner driver (not novice, but def beginner).

1) They work great on the stock rim - no worries.
2) Yes, they'd be optimized on an 8.5" or 9" rim, but oh well.
3) They do get greasy after successive hard laps, but that's to be expected from a street tire that costs $500/set.
4) They will be great for a beginner, because they will "talk" to you to let you know you're messing up (pushing too hard), but at the same time, they will provide plenty grip for having fun and going fast.

If you think the RT-615s are wide ... wait til you see the Yokohama Advan Neova AD07. They are even wider than the Falkens for the same size, cost more too
The Falkens RT-615s are great, they have a progressive break away characteristics which will help beginner drivers. Good choice ...

So folks are running 255s with NO issues on stock rims?
I keep hearing that 245 is as wide as we should go on stocks and have yet to push past this. I'm about due for some new shoes so this is worth pondering for me.

Yes, there are countless threads discussing 255s on stock rims (or stock-sized rims) in the Tire/Wheel/Suspension forum. I run 255/40-17 RT-615s daily on my stock BBS rims, and I have tracked them several times as well with great lap times. Currently, these are the most popular stock replacements in the Evo community, because they are almost half the cost of the stock Advans but former very well.
The same tire comes in a 245-width, but it's a 245/45, which is too tall. The 255/40 has almost the exact same sidewall height as the stock 235/45.

I have seen countless threads on the same but I do not feel that some kid running a big fat tire down to the sippy stop is the same thing as tracking at Mid Ohio or VIR... is it? If I wanted a group think opinion I would ask for it somewhere else but my thought was to ask here of folks who actually track their cars, not turn them into show ponys.

Do you plan to competitively track your car on whatever tires you choose as your daily drivers? If so, then you may want to get the RE-01Rs, Neovas, Pilot Sports, or something along those lines, but they will cost a bit more.
