Lightweight panels and lexan windows?
For those of you that have built race cars, can you recommend some lightweight panels that are actually a weight savings? It looks like a lot of the carbon hoods, trunks, fenders, roof, etc., really are not a weight savings over the standard RS parts. My car needs to go on a serious diet and I'm trying to figure out what parts to swap.
Also, does anyone have a weight on the factory glass? I'm looking at changing over to lexan, at least for the rear window and rear side windows, and trying to figure out how much weight savings there actually is to be had.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The hood is about as light as you can get. You could do a single skin fiberglass hood but it's a lot of work for not much savings.
Cut out the door bars, remove the window glass, esp the rear windshield and rear glass as it's no longer really serving any purpose. Window motors, airbags, crashbeams all have to go.. all of this of course depends on what class you're trying to be legal for.
My Evo II weighs 2500 lbs and I still have 100 or more lbs to get out of it.

Do you have a weight on the window glass?
Car has no window motors as it's an RS, will be pulling the crank mechanisms in the rear, no airbags. will be pulling rear door crash beams, and will start cutting away sheet metal.
Unfortunately, our car is well over 3200lbs in it's current form, mostly due to cage and rally equipment/spares/tools.

the most weight savings can be found on the doors. A good set of carbon doors will put you at competition weight.
Look at the pics from the evos at NASA Nationals at Mid Ohio. Bushur, HG Motorsports all had lexan everything.
DTM motorsports had carbon doors and good suspension.
The weight of a gutted stock door is still more than a carbon door. If you can invest in the carbon. You will not be sorry.
