HKS Evo runs 1:43.5 at Buttonwillow
Or at least thats what the rumor floating around is from yesterday's Super Lap Battle Finals. Just for reference, the previous record set by the JIC/Hankook S15 back in April was a 1:48.766. Anybody there that can confirm that stupid fast time? Specs on the car, driver, track conditions, etc.? Any other impressive times?
EDIT:
Unofficial times...
HKS Evo (Unlimited AWD) - 1:43.523
AMS Evo (Unlimited AWD) - 1:48.772
M-Workz 350Z (Unlimited RWD) - 1:52.9xx
AJ Racing S2000 (Limited RWD) - 1:54.xxx

AMS - 1:48.772
Cyber Evo - 1:48.906
The HKS car is just nuts and this is about what I expected. However, it's very impressive that AMS was able to best the Cyber Evo which shows that the AMS car is one of the best time attack cars in the world... Does anyone have results for the other classes?

the cyber evo is a lil more then a sec off the HKS cars pace at tskuba... so that be about 2.5 sec at button willow...

I wonder if this will push forward the development of TA2...
Was it Mark or Paul driving for AMS? I would love to get their input
5 seconds is just amazing considering how fast the AMS Evo is.

The main difference centers around suspension and resulting CG and geometry advantages. The car is approximately two inches lower the you can run an EVO and keep the pick-up points within the U.S. rules.
The other difference is the tires, they are A048R Yokohamas but of a special compound (legal in Super Street) and much softer than even the U.S. DOT Autocross tires. They changed them each session and they were so soft the blistered(!) after each 3-4 lap stint.
This is not sour grapes, as I stated the car is legal for the Super Street event and we all signed up to run that event, nobody made us! It will be very hard for a U.S. time attack car to beat that time due to the inherent advantages of the JDM rules package and I doubt any U.S. team will build a Super Street only car. The only silver lining might be that Redline is looking at adding a Super Unlimited class which will hopefully fall in line with the JDM rule packages (listening Redline!?!) and that would give us and others a reason to build a car that could beat the HKS car. We would still need an equivalent tire though...
It was super cool to run against the HKS car as you can imagine it was fun to see it run in person. In the first practice session I followed Nob for the whole session (they hadn't dialed the car in yet and Nob was still learning the track) and the car was very impressive you could see the quickness from the above mention stuff plus the 400lb weight advantage into, through and out of every corner...Bad A** car, no doubt
It will be a fun Winter, now where's Martin's phone number...?
