Question Opinions: Best gauge for track days

Here's the deal: I have a Defi BF Boost gauge already. I want to get one more gauge to fit into my two gauge a pillar pod.

So what would be best for keeping tabs on "general engine health" at the track:

1. Water Temp
2. Oil Temp
3. Oil Pressure

I don't want to shell out a ton of money (like some people do) for tons of gauges that I may not need. I might consider getting a third, but that's it.

I'd go with oil pressure since you already have a temp gauge in the instrument cluster.

I think you should consider looking at EGT gauges also.

I'd also go with oil pressure. While the stock coolant temp gauge sucks, it still tells you something. For oil temp, you can infer it a little bit by oil pressure; the pressure will go down as the oil temp goes up. If your oil pressure starts to get significantly lower than normal, then your oil temp is probably pretty toasty.

Much thanks to the replies so far.

@Roldy: Why an EGT gauge? I hadn't thought about this one...

Because if you're egt's get too high it means your detonating/running too lean/melting stuff.

egt is ok, but I would run a wideband instead.

For a track car, water temp, oil p, and oil temp are all very important. Wideband is also important, moreso than EGT, cause EGT's skyrocket not only when it goes super lean, but when the engine retards timing, etc.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'll probably go with the boost and oil pressure gauge. I was going to get a wideband anyway for tuning, which I will probably mount on the steering wheel (since it won't match the Defis in size or color).

Ditto on the oil pressure gauge. IMO the most useful gauge I have on the track (other than the tach, hehe).

My vote is for an EGT with a warning function (I have Prosport), heat is the enemy. Boost gauge as well most definitely if you don't have one already. Wideband is a must for tuning but EGT is cheaper, linear, and might pick up knock before it does damage. On track the wideband is hard to keep an eye on because it fluctuates so much.

Definitely flash in the flash check engine light on knock mod as well if you are so inclined, best gauge ever and its free (small donation suggested). My oil pressure and temperature gauges generally don't fluctuate a whole lot on track (they are good to have of course) but if EGT's start to climb or CEL flashes it's time to turn down the boost. My .02

Oil pressure will be the most useful as it seconds as an "oh ****" gauge if something goes wrong with the motor, you may be able to pull over and shut it down in time. EGT wont be too useful on a stock Evo, if you are modded I would suggest that also.

the flash CEL light on knock mod sounds really good to have. Knock is not friendly. Im going to go check this out.
