car trailer buying advice?

I'm in the market for an open car trailer and am looking for advice on what to look for and what to stay away from. Is there any advantage to a solid deck if all you are using the trailer for is carrying around cars? Are some trailers more prone to mechanical wear than others? Which brands have the best bearings, etc.? Which brands are the best value? Do aluminum trailers offer an advantage besides weight and corrosion resistance?

If you could buy again, what would you do differently?

Would you recommend buying used? What to watch out for with a used trailer?

Hope this isn't considered off topic. I figured that this forum is where there would be the most people with towing/trailer experience.

Thanks!

Rich-

Make sure you post this on the WDCR forums too. There are many guys in our region that trailer their cars.

Rich,

I have some friends (the Carris') with this kind of trailer, to my knowledge they are very happy with it. Their model is grey though with an open deck. You might have seen it at the DC Pro last year if you were walking around the paddock.

If you want Chris' contact info to chat about it let me know.

Edit: You will DEF need different ramps than they have. They were having trouble loading their AS STi, the front bumper would rub the ramps.

John

I would highly recommend a Featherlite aluminum car hauler trailer. I bought one used (3 years old) and have been towing with it for 2 years. Excellent quality. Especially if you don't have a diesel or a strong bigger V8 gas motor (GM 6.0L, Toyota 5.7, etc) I would recommend aluminum. . .

Open deck will throw a lot of grime under your car--go w/ a closed deck. I'd get another tilt again (definitely), only aluminum this time...

I'm definitely leaning to an aluminum trailer -- smallest that will fit a Vette or Camaro on wide rubber (which necessarily includes the Evo). I mainly want aluminum for the neat appearance (since it will be sitting in my driveway) and longevity/resale. I also want something light enough that I can maneuver it a bit when it is disconnected from the tow vehicle. Except for the latter issue, weight isn't too big on an issue to me. Last season I towed my car to VIR in a 20-foot enclosed steel trailer and my truck seemed to handle it okay (3/4 ton 6.0L).

As far as having a big tool box or tire rack, I'd rather carry that stuff in the back of the pickup towing the trailer. More secure in there and less to worry about being left at the track overnight with the trailer. Also, less bulk in the driveway.

Anyone know why the Featherlites (1400-1500 lb) are so much heavier than the Trailex (~950 lbs)?

Hello,

A fellow member BlackTrack just acquired a pretty nice rig:

It holds your car, tires, and fuel. Looks like a solid entry level solution. I don't know the kid but, give him a PM and I'm sure he would give you some details.

I just ordered a Trailex open trailer (PN 8045). Megabucks but in this case it's worth it to me. My trailer will live in my relatively small driveway (2 car garage, small driveway, 4 vehicles and now a trailer), so the ability to move it around by hand is a big plus (the Trailex is 910 lbs). Also, since I'll be pushing the HOA envelope having it at all, the neat anodized appearance should make it less of an eyesore to the neighbors vs. a rusting steel trailer (been there, done that years ago).

The last time I towed my car it was in a rented steel enclosed trailer, so this thing is going to feel like no trailer at all behind my truck. Can't wait to get it
