We at Vorshlag have been running competitive STU and STS cars for many years, back to the class' inception. In that time we've tested on just about every flavor of 140-200 treadwear tires. So far we have not seen an ST legal tire exceed the grip of the Yokohama AD07 (1.25 g on asphalt surface autocrosses). The Dunlop Star Spec is a close second (and I admit we need to do further testing on these - and we have them on our STU EVOX already), and the pricing is much more attractive (for now). Bridgestone RE01R is right behind the Dunlops, but the transient response is slower - nothing can touch the Yokohama's transient feel.

As for the wet...

Every time we ran on the AD07s in the wet, even shaved to 4/32", we had the biggest wins and best PAX results. Rain was the great equalizer, and always put the AD07 much closer to an R compounds performance. We've used these on track as well. The Dunlops on our stock EVO X made 1.02g at a recent autocross and 1.1g lateral on a road course. RE01Rs on our STS classed BMW E30 made 1.3g on a road course, but its a very light car with a fully prepped suspension (AST 4300s). Again, after skipping STU last year for STS (where the choices were Bridgestone or Bridgestone) we've just started testing on the Dunlops for STU again this year. Its a pretty damn good tire.

There's a gaggle of new ST legal tire models coming out in the next several weeks. Yokohama AD08, Kumho XS at the SEMA show. The Bridgestone RE011 is due in January. Lots of new choices!

Cheers,

I like the Dunlops too, but I'm biased. Just checked our MaxQ data from the last event. We made 1.22-1.27g peak, at corner exit on a couple of sweepers, on my Evo on Dunlops. It will be interesting to see the X's improvement with coil-overs. Your AX results are great for a stock STU car. Surprising how close you were to Paul's times.

We just received our set of these tires to try out.

Nitto was kind enough to send us a set of their new "Max Performance" street tires the NT-05. This isn't a replacement for the NT-01, rather a competitor for the Falken Azenis RT-615, Dunlop Z-1 Star Spec, and Hankook RS2.

200 treadwear rating

review to follow......I will have to get these mounted up ASAP!

That's the same concern I had, too much void area.

Nitto could be a good track tire, but may be tough to get up to temp for the 1st run in AX. The rubber felt relatively hard using my thumb-nail durometer tester at SEMA.

Agreed.

Left: Yokohama AD08. Right: Nitto NT05

Comparing these two the NT05 looks like it has two Grand Canyons running down the middle of the tire. Big tread voids. That rarely works out well for improving dry grip. I'll take the AD08 in the theoretical bench race FTW, wet or dry.

Anyone have any real test data / data logging on either of these new tires? We're supposed to be getting sets of AD08s and RE011s to test early next year, so if/when we do we'll test them against the Dunlop Star Specs we're already running on the EVO X. From what I've seen so far, I still think its going to be a battle between these three brands at the top of the Street Touring autocross ranks. I think the Kumho and Toyo and Nitto offerings will be a good second tier of ST tires, but who knows - there could be a ringer in that batch yet.

We got baseline suspension testing done with the Dunlops on track and autocross sites with the (terrible) stock suspension, and the good bits are built and about to go on. We just lined up another test day at the same track a few weeks from now so we'll post the before/after data soon.

I'm predicting it will be a dead heat between the AD08 and the RE11, and the Z1 will fall by the wayside. Yes, the Z1 is pretty fast now, but in my experience, the AD07 - which is several years old now - is still the better tire, and I can't imagine the AD08 being any slower.

I just hope Tire Rack has a clearance sale on the AD07 when the AD08s start coming in.

Ad08 are supposed to be 1 second faster than the previous Ad07's on a 60 second course. So I have heard
