No offense, but your spring is held in place with a zip tie in that picture.

Most sleeve systems are crap (ebay crap at that) and dangerous and not really any cost savings. You'd be better off going a smikeevo (or whatever it is) setup.

That was done for convenience. When the car is raised off of the ground, the spring comes off the perch rather than sits on it... made it easier to adjust the collars and clean/grease the Torrington bearings on the perch. It doesn't affect the functionality of the sleeve/spring/perch at all and is not required. Just about every coilover running short springs and no adjustable lower bracket will separate from the upper spring perch when raised, sleeve or not.

But it doesn't matter when the car is on the ground, because unless I get the car completely airborne for a good couple seconds (or minutes, depending on rebound ), the dampers are never going to extend far enough to separate the spring from the perch. I thought someone from Vorshlag had a made a post somewhere about this...

I still don't understand the beef with GC and why people think they're "dangerous". I've used their stuff several times with no problems and know several other serious racers that have used them with no problems on IT cars, Honda Challenge cars, etc., and I've never once seen or heard of anyone being put into a "dangerous" situation that was directly related to something from a GC sleeve - street, track, or otherwise.

Coilover sleeves suck, so I'm not sure why *anyone* would ever run that crap vs. a japanese coilover.

I run Stance GR+Pro SSD coilovers and they are fine, but I don't know any better. People with more champaign tastes will point you to a KW/Robispec or AST (Fair/hancheyb for sure ) or JIC.
You should take JIC off that last bit, they aren't in the same class.

That's not bad for DFVs. I paid just under $3k for mine from Sam Strano at stranoparts.com. In fact call him first if your interested in Ohlins. Not only is he a really friendly guy he is a multi-national Solo champion and knows his stuff when it comes to suspensions.

Another company that should be looked into AST. I had really considered going with them since most if not all of their US guys are ex-Koni guys, they just didn't have a set available for the Evo platform last year. They are avaiable now though.

AST 4200 rear coilovers for EVO X

We make 4100 single and 4200 doubles for the EVO X already and we're working on more designs as well. AST has made single, double and triple (4300 with remotes) adjustables for the EVO 5-9, as well as rally variants, inverted, etc. All ASTs are high pressure adjustable monotubes, all built in Holland at the AST facility. Just a side note: Strano and Works are also AST dealers.


AST 4300 competition rally shocks (the two with orange springs) for EVO chassis, featuring 60mm inverted shafts in front

I considered ASTs but when set up with custom springs, valving and camber plates they were actually more expensive than the Ohlins that were on sale. Naturally, I went for the Ohlins but from what I hear, AST is a good alternative to the KW V3s and PSS9s.

That's weird, when Strano and I were looking into either Ohlins or ASTs we were told they (ASTs) weren't avail yet for the VIII/IX in a single adjustabe.
