KAPS ACD Controller @ willow springs & buttonwillow
11/07/10
EVO/WRX challenge @ streets of willow
Our 2nd place finish for the 2010 championship was secure, so we took the chance to practice on the wheel & tire setup for the upcoming Import tuner/modified magazine EVO/STi shootout. Continental tire sponsors the event every year, and tuners are invited to run on Continental extreme grip (340 treadwear) tires. We decided to maximize grip with 17x9.5 wheels borrowed from our customer, Patrick Ward.
After we received the invitation from the magazine, we talked to KAPS transmission about their ACD computer which adjusts torque split based on driver preference. They sponsored our EVO IX and it was ready for the test day at Streets of willow running 265/40/17 Continental tires. We wanted to use the advantage of ACD controller to offset the effect of the hard compound street tire compared to our Toyo RA1 set we had used at Buttonwillow.
We ran with the stock ACD controller in the morning sessions, lap times are below.

Then we switched to the KAPS ACD Controller, and used the base Tarmac maps provided by them. I can’t say I utilized the system perfectly, having less front grip makes it harder to get the car in turn in and throttle out. Ambient termps were under 60F all day, dropping to 50s in the afternoon, freeeezing cold!
Run group: Red 4 – Tarmac technical
We had a chance to run bumper to bumper with EVO/WRX challenge mod class contender, Isamu. His EVO VIII is well built, and runs on 255 Nitto NT01s (100 treadwear semi slick). I only had advantage at corner exits and straight lines with more power, and Isamu had better entry and mid-corner speed, carrying more speed, thus lapping 1:26.250 against my 1.27:004. We also had the Good-Win Racing Miata pushing behind us and running a 1:24.555 after getting around the EVOs.

Run group: Red 5 – Tarmac Fast & Tarmac slippery (last 3 laps)
I went out again and used the other 2 tarmac base maps and got some more time shaved off despite the drop in temperature. But can’t deny the fact that the car was faster with cooler air.

EVO vs STi Shootout
& Super Lap Battle practice @ Buttonwillow
Wheel & Tire:
Speed Ventures EVO/WRX challenge: 18x9 / 245/40/18 Toyo RA1 (100 treadwear)
Import Tuner/Continental EVO/STi Shootout: 17x9.5 265/40/17 Continental (340 treadwear)
Car Setup:
Tomei 2.3L stroker kit
Tomei typeR camshafts
OE exhaust manifold (not ported)
GT3076R .82 A/R turbo & 44mm tial wastegate
garageGT FMIC intercooler
garageGT downpipe & test pipe
Tomei prototype Expreme Ti cat-back exhaust
4" (100mm) intake pipe, HKS 100mm filter & custom airbox
HKS SSQV recirculated blowoff valve
MP Tuning AEM EMS v2 #0001
HKS Hipermax II Pro coilovers & Swift springs
Cusco front & rear sway bars
Performance Friction rotors & race pads
Carbonetic single carbon blade clutch & OE flywheel
Full interior / 3180lbs (1445kg) / OE bumper & wing
450 ftlb (62kgm) Wheel torque / 405 WHP
600 ftlb (82kgm) Flywheel torque / 540 BHP
Personal best time of 2:01.311 was clocked at round 6 of EVO/WRX Challenge on October 24. I went out to beat it on harder compound tires, relying on the KAPS ACD Conrtoller, and lapped a 2:03.4XX in the morning practice using the Tarmac fast setting at warm up pace.
In the time attack session, I switched to Tarmac Slippery mode, and dropped lap times to 2:01.4XX. The hairpin, turn #2 was where I felt the most drastic change. The Continentals was losing grip..
20 min time attack video
I was planning to swap tires around before the 5 lap battle, but the practice schedule for the WRX and Supra did not allow us to fully concentrate on the EVO. I went out with tortured front tires and got a 2:01.6XX clocked.

You really want something you can fine tune for different tracks.. different tires and track temps..
Not sure what the do-luck is capable of, but the KAPS ACD controller gives you a lot freedom. I haven't played with the gravel mode yet, very curious

practically, the flash is same as selecting a map on KAPS ACD controller. But KAPS unit will give you "on the fly" map swaps, 9 base maps, and fine tune options for those.. unlimited adjustment range from open diff to locked any second you want. If you are a track guru, you will find yourself running different maps for different tracks.
