NEW to autocross Tires

I'll just thrown this out there as a little opposition to the current consensus. I started AutoX with All Season Tires and IMO it was a mistake. While I got practice, I felt that I learned too many bad habits since I was compensating for the poor tire grip. I was always in the bottom third of the entries. The following year(last year) I switched to Z1 Star Specs. I immediately went to the top 10 or 12. I also felt that I spent half the season re-learning how to drive the car again with the new tires instead of building off last season.
I would personally start with a great high performance summer tires (star spec) and start learning on those. I would agree with the majority here and not advise going straight to r-comps.
I will be attempting to run hoosier a6 this season for AutoX.

I ran the G-force KDW's last season. They are a great DD tire and amazing in the rain and what not. When it comes to autocross though they get greasy very quickly. I switched to the Z1 star specs for my last 5 races and when i say there was a world of difference... there was a WORLD of difference. Star specs were way superior. Thats my 2 cents on the KDW's.
Just for some additional food for thought, alot of the guys who do drifting and gymkhana use the KDW's (they like to slide)

Rules guide: http://www.scca.com/documents/2011%2...lo%20Rules.pdf
Tires section:
A. Tires may have section widths up to and including the following:
ST, STS, STR (AWD) – 225 mm
STX (AWD), STU (AWD) – 245 mm
STR (2WD) – 255 mm
STX (2WD) – 265 mm
STU (2WD) – 285 mm
Note this does not take into account any other modifications done to the car. At minimum, based on a 235 tire, you are going to be in STX/STU.

I know there were some people talking about 200 UTQG vs the current rule of 140. But I have yet to see the 2011 rules. I am waiting also. If the rules stay at 245 with a 140utqg. I will be buying Toyo R1R's. again.. Great tire, they did not fall apart as the star specs did.(The lot here is like a cheese grater)
+1 on Toyo R1R's. If hankooks rs3 came in the proper tire size for the class i would run with them, I would love to see a change of 255mm max size for STU.

Ive heard the R1R's are great and are AMAZING in rain conditions. However i heard that they wear very quickly. How many events did you get out of yours? My buddy put his Z1 star specs through 23 events before they were totally gone

Considering you have a fmic and MBC, you're not STU legal. Having a tire larger than 245 should not matter to you. If you want the Hankooks, go for the 255/40. Based on your mod list you have a BSP car. Perhaps your region has a street tire class you'll be able to run in... I know the SF region has T2, which is the SP/SM street tire class, and ranking is all based on index.

I'd say that Star Spec are very good tires, but!due to the fact that it doesnt hold heat too well ( hot and humid heat of Alabama Summers) and there are not as many people in our region = less time for the tires to cool down between runs even with spraying the tires down between runs. The best runs are alwasy the first or second run for the morning and afternoon.
Comparing with the other Evo driver with the KumhoXS their times are more consistant specially in the heat of hot summer months and the weight that our car carries.
IE: I'll be using the Kumho XS this seaso instead of the Star specs. But results may varies . just my opinion. C
