EvoJoeRacing: Wins Fastest Time of Day NY SCCA on Street Tires!
Hey guys,
This past weekend i competed with the NY SCCA autox event which they hosted like a Pro Solo event. For those who have never been to a Pro Solo event, its a completely different style of racing that mixes both drag racing and autocross. There are 2 mirror image courses set up side by side and you go head to head with another drive in your class. There is a Drag Tree that you stage up to, it counts down and you go on green! After you finish your lap on the right side, you switch sides and race again. The fastest combined time of both Right and Left courses is the winner. This was the first time NY SCCA tried this style venue and they pulled it off nicely. It was a great event. The courses were relatively the same with a slalom, turn around and slalom. The turn around on the left and right courses were different sizes and the right was a lot tighter/slower given the lot size and obstacle but all together the courses were designed to be 25-30 second courses. We had 8 runs in the morning heat and 4 more in the afternoon heat.
My first 4 runs were awesome! My first run of the day on the right side was a 22.750 which would have held as the Fastest Time of Day on the Right Course! Except I coned it... damn! I actually battled the right side in the first slalom as that first cone was the death of me! Heres a good shot of me hating that cone!
During my second set of 4 runs in the morning heat I was able to get a clean run on the right side, wasnt the fastest time but i just wanted to get a clean run down in the books. I also set the Fastest Time of Day on the Left course during this heat! So it was a battle from hear on out to win the event with Fastest Time of Day.
The second heat in the afternoon I had 4 more runs to try and get quicker. I was battling Josh in his ESP Legacy GT on Hoosiers for the FTD for the day. He has FTD on the right and I had FTD on the left. We were soo close it was nerve racking! I pushed hard on the last 4 runs and ended up running faster on left course and making up .5 seconds on the right! But so did Josh. He ran faster on the right side and made up .4 seconds on the right. We were EXTREMELY CLOSE! When I say I was pushing hard I was really pushing the car to its limits. I was launching the car of its 2step at 6500rpms and flying out off the light. On the left course I ended up Drifting the entire back section on one of the runs and on the right side ended up doing a Jump getting all 4 wheels off the ground through the finish line.
So on to the results. New York SCCA has an interesting way of grouping classes together. They group all the stock classes together in one group and call it Stock, all the Street Tire classes in another group and call it Tire and all the Street Prepared and Street Modified classes in another group and call it Street Prepared. Then they use a PAX system to scale the lap times of each class in that group and give placement based on that. Unfortunately, the Street Modified class i run in has probably the WORST scaling multipliers which definitely hurts. So for my Class (Street Prepared) I ended up in 3rd Place.
The PAX System Killed me! But hey thats the sport and both Adam and Josh are awesome drivers! But there were still more awards to come! They give out awards for the Overall Pax winner and the Fastest Time of Day which are the big dawg awards! For the Over All PAX I ended up 5th out of 74 Cars. Again the PAX system does not favor SM cars lol. Ill take it though! 5th in PAX out of 74 cars racing in the SM division on STREET TIRES!
So the last award to be given out Fastest Time of Day.
First Place! I won the Fastest Time of Day award and man was it close!!! .055 seconds between me and Josh and this was done all on STREET TIRES! Now you can see how the PAX system really affects me. With Josh and I .055 seconds apart in raw time we were just over 1 second apart in PAX times.
I want to thank everyone who has helped along the way and big thanks to all my sponsors; Tach Motor Works, E-Spec, Touge Factory, Stance, TRE Transmissions, Forge Motorsport, Spoolin Up, CustomizeMyEvo.com, Unique Finish and Fueled Mag for all the support and help to getting this car into top shape. I couldnt have asked for a better team and better support from everyone. The fact that we are being so competitive on Street Tires is just an awesome feeling. I cannot wait to get on some RCOMPS! Hopefully we will be able to get a set this season so we can really dominate! I will be posting the photos online next week and adding it to my website also. I have a bunch and there are more coming in from other photographers. Still working on getting a GoPro... Hopefully have that soon so I can get back to making Videos! Here are some photos from the event:
