EvoJoeRacing: 2nd Place @ Evolution Super Shootout

Hey Guys

This past weekend I competed in the Evolution Super Shootout at the ZMAX Dragway in Concord. For those who don’t know, the Super Shootout is a new style National SCCA autocross venue put together by the Evolution School. It combines aspects of both the National Tour style and Pro Solo events into one. I entered into the Street Modified division and yes I was racing on Street Tires. 255/40 Nitto NT-05’s to be exact . Definitely under prepared for the SM class cause they are no 285/30 Hoosier A6. But I was out there to have fun and try and whoop some *** on street tires.

So a little run down of how this event worked. Saturday morning you raced 4 runs to battle out for class champions as well as a PAX ranking across all competitors. The top 32 PAX would advance into the Shoot out on Sunday. In the afternoon was the Last Chance Qualifiers. Everyone who wasn’t in the top 32 PAX would get an additional 2 runs to try and better their PAX rankings. The top 16 PAX of the Last Chance would advance into the Shoot Out. They also pulled the top Ladies and had a Random Drawing to finish off the bracket of 64 for the Shoot Out.

The first portion of the event was class racing. Each class would compete similarly to the National Tour event. We got 4 runs to put up our best times and to win class trophies. There were 3 entries in SM. A blue STI with 295 Hoosiers and a GT500 with 315 Hoosiers. If you remember, these were the same cars I raced against a few weeks ago and lost to. I was the only one in SM with street tires at a National event so I knew it was going to be a challenge.

The course was awesome mixing both fast and technical sections including a 300ft sweeping turn around. This course used up the entire parking lot at ZMAX. There were 4 heats and SM was the first heat to run for the day. I was the first of the SM cars to hit the track and took it like every other course, warm up the tires, learn the course at speed and find your brake points. First lap came in with a 58.644. Not a bad run as I saw a lot of places to make up time. The STI came in with a 58.624 +1 and the GT500 came in with a 59.982. After the first run I was sitting in first but knew that wouldn’t last as these guys were just getting there tires warm. Second run I went out there to push it a little harder and brake a little deeper in some portions. I came into a section way to fast and started to under steer. I had to really slow down in a faster section of the course just to stay on the course. As I recovered though I was way off line for the next obstacle and hit a cone. I ended the run with a 58.424 +1. Ran faster on this lap even with the huge screw up and found a few more places to make up some time. The STI came in with a 55.063 and the GT500 with a 58.494. That was a killer time by the STI and I knew was going to be hard to beat.

Went out on the 3rd run focusing on a clean fast run and I pulled it off. Hitting the 2nd gear RPM limiter in 3 different sections I ran a 56.267! Last run of the day and I was just trying to kill it. I decided to try and short shift into 3rd in the fast sections to try and get a little bit more speed. Ran a nice clean run of 56.217, my fastest of the day. Here are the final times for both the STI and GT500.

Ended up with 2nd place in the class RUNNING ON STREET TIRES! And look at those time differences. 1.5 seconds off the STI and .192 faster than the GT500! 2 weeks ago I was 3.5 seconds behind the STI and 2 seconds behind the GT500. I directly contribute this increase in timing to the DBA rotors I installed Friday night before the race. DBA had sent me out a set of slotted 5000 fronts and slotted 4000 rears that I installed late Friday night before the event on Saturday. These things were amazing out there on the track really getting the car to slow down for the turns! Big thanks to DBA!

So with the 2nd place win I was ecstatic. Definitely not in the top 32 PAX times but got a second stab at it in the Last Chance Qualifiers. Top 16 in PAX advance from the Last Chance so I had 2 runs to make it count. I ran those 2 runs ***** out as hard as I could, pushing the car to its limits. After all heats were done with there runs they announced the top 16.

I was in the Top 16! I got to advance into the Shoot Out! Never in a million years would I have thought I would have made the Shootout running Street Tires! I was definitely pumped!

Sunday was the day for the Shoot Out and we were blessed with rain. Not just any rain, this was like monsoon type down poor turning the lot into pretty much a lake!

Again, I don’t have rain tires, just the Nitto Street Tires. I figured I had a better chance this way though then trying to run guys on Hoosiers. The shoot out was run similarly to a Pro Solo event. The bracket pair would go up to the line and battle it out head to head. The fastest PAX time would advance. The first round we got 2 runs which were run back to back. Once you finished you pulled back to the start and ran again. Every other round after that was a single run. The weather forecast said it was supposed to stop raining around 12 but man were they wrong. The skies opened up as we were racing. To the point that the finish line was basically a gigantic puddle. We had to be careful because as we would come through the finish the wake and spray of water was knocking over the cones. Yup and that counted as a knocked over cone!

It was time for my first run of the first round and I went out there to test it out. Ran a clean run and decently fast. Second run I tried to push it a little faster and spun out. So I was banking on the first run to advance me through. Not being able to see my competitors runs or times it was definitely stressful sitting there waiting to see if I advance or not. After the suspense of waiting I won the first round and advanced! I had made it to the Top 32 of the shoot out! However, the second round I wasn’t so lucky. I ended up loosing but still was extremely pumped about the weekends outcome!

The Evolution Super Shoot Out was an amazing event despite the rain. Placing 2nd in Street Modified, Qualifying for the Shoot Out and winning the first round done ALL ON STREET TIRES is just awesome! I couldn’t have asked for better results. I want to thank DBA for the new rotors and definitely contribute the success of this event to them.

Here is a video from the event
