Brake fluid for road racing?
Hi guys!,
I recently picked up an evo 8 built for road racing and will be swapping out brake fluid before my first upcomming track day at Sebring raceway. What brake fluid would you guys recommend?
My choices so far are:
Napa DOT4
Motul DOT4
Napa DOT5
I wil be road racing about every other month at palm beach, homestead, and sebring.
I'm leaning towards the DOT5 but I don't know anyone who has ran it yet. I've used Napa DOT4 in my past rx7's and was pleased. My tuner has recommended the motul though.
Thanks,
Damon

DOT 3 or 4 is what is recommended for our system. Of the three named, go for the Motul for its high boiling point and compressibility. You want something with higher dry boiling point. Depending on your urgency to change fluids before the track day, you could look into a few other brands. I've been running Amsoil Series 600, and doing pretty well with it. I know a few others in here are doing the same. There are many other brands available that are good. I hear a lot of good things about the new ENDLESS RF660.

Good stuff Chu. After a brief search it looks like dot5 is not going to happen. It should not be mixed with a system previously using dot3 or 4 without completly cleaning out the system because of the silicone in dot5.
I will look into those brands.

Castrol SRF 590 // 518
Neo Super DOT 610 610 // 421
Motul Racing 600 585 // 421
ATE Super Blue Racing 536 // 392
ATE TYP 200 536 // 392
Valvoline Synpower 503 // 343
Castrol LMA DOT 3/4 446 // 311
Ford Heavy Duty DOT 3 550 // 290
Performance Friction 550 // 284

There has been quite a few additions to the list of fluids since, but you get the idea. Check out the new stuff like Ferrodo, Stoptech, and Endless.

CASTROL SRF. This brake fluid is in a class by itself. Also the price is in a class all by itself unfortunately. But well worth it.
I did everything I could to avoid brake fade on my VIII at Watkins Glen. 2 piece rotors, uprated pads and brake ducts to no avail.
Only until I swapped out to Castrol was I able to have a bullet proof brake pedal. I now use it on my X with only PFC01's on stock rotors and no ducting. No problem at the track all day.
Its pricey at 80 bucks a liter but considering you are paying almost a grand (tires, gas, brakes, hotel, tolls, etc...) for a track day weekend its a small price to pay to maximize your track time.

^ i've talked to racers who have used SRF and only flush once at the beginning of the season. so you'll save money and time in the long run if you use SRF. the wet boiling point is 518 which is almost as high the dry boiling point for some of the other fluids.
Amsoil Series 600 for me, been great so far. i definitely want to try SRF or Endless stuff soon

AMSOIL DOT4 or SRF.
I use the AMSOIL DOT4 personally and love it as compared to the Motul stuff. I had to bleed with Motul before every event, now I do a full flush to start the season and maybe 1-2 bleeds a year with a 15-20 event schedule. Here's an ongoing review I've got for it:

If I'd ever change; I'd goto SRF.
