2004 Rolex 24 At Daytona Recap
MY RANT:
Great race overall. I watched about 6hrs of it on saturday afternoon. When i woke up Sunday they were under yellow flag cause of the heavy heavy rain through the night. Come 7am the red flag came out that lasted abotu 3hrs till 10:30. During this time the clock still ticks away, but teams are not allowed to work on their cars. Lead to a pretty interesting turn of events. Gotta love endurance racing! Tony Stewart who had lead the race from 7pm on Saturday till 1pm on Sunday was poised to win, he led more laps then anyone..............then...........bah!
This was about 3 laps from the end........omg!
So the Pontiac-powered Doran DP grabbed the checkered flag.

When the rocker system that supports the rear end began to fail, the crew tried to keep the hard-pressed car in the race by wedging blocks of wood into the suspension, but the chassis simply had too much movement to keep the blocks in place and the rear wheels began to hop, letting the blocks slip out. Even under some very skillful and sensitive braking, the car kept locking its rear brakes and couldn't maintain equilibrium. Stewart spun at the end of the back straight, leaving the Chevrolet-powered coupe stuffed into the wall.
So the Pontiac-powered Doran DP grabbed the checkered flag.

Oh damn. I must have shut the TV off right before it happened. It's nice to see these Nascar guys kick some *** in other cars. I know that they beat the Europeans in the Race of Champions. To see Jeff Gordon pilot a 206 WRC was wild.

yea, I watched nearly the whole race on sat and the rest on sun. I slept while it was under caution. I was bugg-eyed bye the time it was over.
I was totally impressed with the GT class cars the were whippin up on some of the slower prototypes. I think one placed 4th overall. Forget which team.
I was so pissed when Stewarts suspension broke, they totally had it in the bag, lap and a half left on 2nd place with 17 minutes left. What crappy luck.

I now NASCAR has a bad rap, but there are some pretty talented driver. You would never know it watching them drive in circles though. I really liked when Gordon got in Montoyas F1 car and and had a quik enough lap time to qualify for indy

Very hard race from the driving perspective (I drove the number 14 SGS gt3 cup 30th overall and 11th in class) We had no problems with the car other than what the drivers did to it. I was hit by the SGS corvette on a restart in the first 30 min and my co drivers had a hard time avoiding DP cars and the ocasional gt3RS Oh well it was still fun. I think the GT car would have won overall if the race had been run the full 24 hours.
