Bfg r1-s

I am looking to try out the R1-S this season and it appears that the specs on various vendors are not consistent with the BFG official website. The size I am looking at is 285/30/18.

BFG website: http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-s...

Part #: 05904

Wheel width range: 9.5"-10.5"

TireRack (or various other vendors) website: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.j...

Wheel width range: 10"-11"

So a couple of observations/comments:

1) According to BFG website, it appears that for the same size 285/30/18, the minimum wheel width is different between the R1-S and R1.

2) Seems like all the vendors are showing the incorrect specs for the R1-S if it is indeed true that the same size has different minimum wheel width requirement

3) Are the R1-S really wider than other brands for the same size (i.e. if I ran V710 in 285, I should run 275 for the R1-S)?

I have emailed BFG about it, but they didn't really answer my question on why TireRack is showing different specs than their website.

Just want to hear your opinions/experience.

Thanks.

They are 1/2 an inch wider on a 9.5" wheel over hoosier/kumho. I haven't seen them mounted on 10'5's yet. But I would assume the same. I will take some pics this weekend or post them up.

Have you done any testing on your ASP car between these and the A6's? any back to back testing?

A friend of mine tried them back to back on a 240sx comparing them I think to kumho's. He hated them on day one but loved them on day 2 with extra pressure.

The BFG's are wider on almost all of the 18" tires by a whole size, so a 275 is really a 285, a 285 is really closer to a 298. NASA dinged them for this in the 275 and 245 sizes, so i'd do at least a 10" or 10.5" wheel if you want to do these 285's properly.

Thanks Jeremy,

That would be great to see. If I knew they were that much wider, I would have gone with a 10" wheel anyways since that extra 1/2 inch probably means more fender work to fit.

Are you fitting 10.5" on the stock fenders with cut/pull?

Thanks. That's what I have heard too. In fact, a friend told me the 275 is as wide as the Hoosier 295.

Just need more confirmation. Psychologically, I want the 285, but if 275 R1-S is really 285 for others, then I guess I have no choice.

The general trend for ASP in autox seems to be running 10"-10.5" now, and I just recently bought 9.5" to replace my old ones thinking that I don't want to do anymore fender work.

They are noticeable wider and pinched on the 9.5. I would bet you could run these on an 11" wheel and be perfect. I'll post pics of both the 9.5 and 10.5 fitment this weekend during the Test and Tune.

Significant rear modification is required to make 10.5's fit. At least with a +15 ET. If you can get a +25, that would be ideal. But they don't make that in a RPF1.

Depending on how the TnT goes this weekend. I may be stepping back down to the 9.5's just because Enkei just released a 14lb 18x9.5 wheel. That's lighter than my volks by a couple lbs and 5lbs lighter than my RPf1's. Big difference.

Don't forget the 275 is taller too. That will present additional fitment issues.

Wait....they did? Now it makes sense why I got a deal on the RPF1....5lbs is a lot.

a +25 is still to far out in my opinion. a +30 to +32 is where it's at for a 10.5.

I was just guessing since I don't have any expierence with other rear offsets. But there is a LOT of inboard clearance with the +15. Thanks for the clarification Marshall

I had similar experience with them, but mine (255/40/17) liked less pressure than the nt01's. The BF's also take at least a couple of laps to get up to temperature and perform better on hotter days.
