That is the one difference between the 8 and 9 water pump. The 8 pump doesn't have that threaded boss. The 9 has it because the alternator bracket mounts to it and can't use an 8 alternator bracket because the MIVEC system gets in the way.
To my knowledge the only option for a 9 pump is OEM. Only the 8 has aftermarket pump options. I think an 8 pump could be used on a 9 if you made a different alternator mount bracket.

You can make the 8 pump work, but you need an 8 bracket, and you won't have the part of the bracket that goes to the intake manifold. My car has been fine like that for a long time.

I hope that shop know what they're doing with your car man. That's not a mistake and Evo shop makes.

About 1 week to order/ship stuff, 2 weeks to put the car back together, 1 week to break-in/tune... they're really my only option right now

Not specifically, but it's a flaw in using the OEM design. The ATI uses two more bolts to hold the damper on the hub, and that simply doesn't happen. Have had OEM, grade 10.9 fail. and ARP 8740 starting to crack.
Also, the damper hub being press fit on the crank (ATI) makes it more effective. I've seen fretting/micro welding on the OEM gear and balance shaft delete spacer with both the OEM bolt and the ARP crank bolt. Suggests it's moving around since it's slip fit.

Not just the damper face to the gear, but also the gear to the spacer, and then the face of the crank to the spacer (the spacer that replaces the balance shaft gear).
I've seen the issue mostly in cars that see the rev limiter or the 2-step a lot, so drag racing and autocross.
