The TRE 5 speed with 03-04 longer 4th was the best thing I did to my MR.
The 1:1 ratio PAR straight cut 4th gear is the business. Wouldn't even bother with the Evo8 4th.

Well, this was like 13(!) years ago so I'm sure there are even better options now.

been doing some research on the s1s vs s2s, still deciding. sounds like s2s will need a little more finesse from the tuner to get the idle and such right, but with zero tick lifters and the rest of the supporting stuff, could rev to 8500 safely. will probably still (relatively) shortshift around 8k or so to keep things in as much of a safe range as possible, still not worth the tenths, but would love a little more power up top.

@Lumpy Sticks did you have any issues tuning the idle? who did your tuning?

I built a e9 with s2 cams and we had maf issues (probably to do with hks 7460 spooling on idle) but after switching to SD the idle has been super smooth, even at 14.7 afr..

I'm sorry but any tuner that has a problem tuning s2's should not be tuning. There is no secret to tuning for bigger cams. Granted, im on an aftermarket ecu but same thing applies to oem. I do all my own tuning because I don't trust many tuners. There are good ones but they are rare these days. But no, I did not have any issues tuning the s2's for idle. My car never stalls and idles fine at 850. My new cams are even bigger and still should be no issues dialing them in at idle.

If you are already on SD and have a good tuner, you won't have any issues. If you have a maf, a set of cams is a great excuse to go SD. Those extra rpm make a world of a difference on track even though you aren't making power up there.

hadn't ever thought of that - will do some research on speed density tuning

when I was getting the s2's the consensus was that they needed a bit higher idle and some mivec tunning. I did have issues with idle on stock maf but it was hard to separate between cams and turbo. We noticed some strange resonances in the maf signal on idle, and things were even worse with metal inlet piping... Anyhow, SD cured it all, without special mivec tuning on idle, and without richening the mixture... it really runs like stock. Even with MAF you should be able to tune it out, but I never bothered with it..

I wonder if the new GT-III turbo from HKS is any more reliable.

The HKS turbos always looked interesting due to the fast spool. Not many people interested in spending $3K on a turbo that barely has higher HP than a stock turbo, though.

What about X's? S1's or S2's?

I wouldn't bother putting S2s on a stock turbo car. The stock turbo is out of steam well before 8500, there's no power to be gained. S1s are definitely better suited for a stock turbo.

even for the sole purpose of stretching the gear to prevent an upshift that immediately needs to be downshifted aynway?
