I think I need to look into a taller shifter as well. I dont really want shorter shifter though. Just move the knob up with same throw. Not sure I can do it with base bushings either cause I have to keep center console in place.

you are right though.. might be worth investigating a aftermarket shifter.. I am out of time anyhow..
Off the top of my head I know CAE, IRP, Coolerworx, and RTD all make 5 speed shifters. Might be a couple others. I think the cheaper ones are about $600 usd, my CAE was around $900. Not cheap but it's still the best money I've spent on the car.

Tell us how the CAE improved shifting please?

You cannot money-shift synchro box, so faster is ...not best for box.

I raised the base of my shifter 3" and can't run the top part of the console. If I were to guess, you could probably do 2", or so, and keep it. Maybe. But not sure that would help much. Better than nothing?

Zero slop whatsoever, throws are shorter, gate spacing is very precise you never second guess what gear you're going into, shift knob is closer to the steering wheel. It almost doesn't even feel like a cable shifted transmission.

I flat foot shift all the time at the strip. As long as your fuel or ignition cut is setup properly it won't hurt the gearbox.

My down time is over summer, our winter is like your summer and I like tracking the evo over winter as its kinder on the tires and motor, so this summer the rego comes up so after I'll pay that then pull the motor and freshen it up, its probably the biggest thing Ive done in life so far, so I'll get it to a machine shop for an 85.5 and fitting of some carrello rods, 1400 wiseco, ACLs, all the strong stuff, then hawl *** it back in, this will be the base of the next stage in the new year, probably 1300s, FP red, flex tune, looking at a safe build of 400/360, maybe up the rev to 8000 and I'll become the old guy with the fast evo in the street my kids can go roll racing with

Yeah, thatll do!

Factory location is just too low and far back for my race seat. I have to sorta contort myself to shift back to 2nd and 4th with the shoulder bolster. Will add that to the list of things I should work on this winter.

Same here (I'm short, so even cup holders are difficult to use. Yes, I still have cup holders). It's going to be even worse when I put the 5spd in. There HAS to be a way to move the base of the shifter forward a few inches. I'll be looking into it next week, when I'm installing everything.

Theres a rat rod here in new zealand where the gear lever sticks out the sunroof haha. literally drives with his hand out the roof. its like the car version of a chopper bike
